In the present climate where the US has said an unelected person who has trained in the US for this position and is trying to get control of Venezuela is President against the wishes of the people of Venezuela and he is trying to get its gold, I do not think that is such a bad idea. Britain used to be considered a safe place to leave your gold when in such difficulty. However that is now over. Russia for Venezuela is probably the safest place and certainly more safe than where the US can get its mitts on it.

The thing I find weird is not what the US is doing. The US has done this before many times. As people say it is a re run on Chile all those years ago. 'We must hurt the economy till they SCREAM. That is the US Empire destroying people who indulge in democratic rights of choosing how their country is run, of being in charge of their own Sovereignty.

What is strange this time is that British and European papers are parroting the US. That I think is a first. We have a program This Week and they had Ken Livingstone on. They were saying what was in the papers. He said come on you know this is what the US has done time and time before and sure enough they did not deny it. They knew.

Another example, a Labour Politician who knows what is going on and speaks up in Parliament. He is told he should be ashamed of himself for speaking such in the 'mother of Parliaments'...so there is a very dangerous lack of democracy, freedom of speech beginning in the UK and Europe.

The US has now given up the pretence of being anything but a Tyrannical Corporate owned country. A democracy it is not....and look how Trump seems to have no one arguing against him. How it is acting towards Venezuela is not lawful. How it is acting towards Venezuela is totally disrespect of Democracy.

Max Blumenthal illustrates the ignorance of Congress members on the situation in Venezuela.

To play with people's lives in this way is unacceptable.

"A first"? No, I don't think so. NATO nations have been playing lapdog for some time now.

But not like this. Something is really changing in the UK. Possibly it began with Corbyn which the London School of economics did research on and said went far further than allowing for free speech and particularly because most of it was lies, all this against the leader of the Opposition was, the LSE said, in reality demeaning the opposition and so Democracy. There is a new place of misinformation the Integrity Institute. Striped horse was the first to mention it here. They pretend they are there to contradict false news when they are really there to create it. It appears it is a Tory agency run out of our Military Intelligence and they were responsible for much of this stuff against Corbyn. In a Democracy to show the Leader of the Opposition such lack of respect is lack of respect to the Democracy. Then there is the Guardian who in the past would have spoken out honestly about what is going on in Venezuela. We never felt the need to collude with the US about its misdeeds in Latin and Central America but maybe on that you are right it is just a follow up to our collusion with the US's destruction of the ME. There is more though going on. I am going to check out more the Integrity Institute. I think I read it may have moved to the US.

It may be that the new bit is an intent to destroy the left in the US and UK. That is what the real left in the US say is beginning to happen. Fascism always hates the left more than anyone.

Both pro and anti government protests in the streets of Caracas today as both sides dig in their heels. Maduro calls for moving ahead legislative elections to this year - likely as a move to undermine the pro - opposition majority in the National Assembly. Still says he is willing to hold talks a move that is rejected by Guaido and his US backers. Mike Pence was quoted as saying "the time for dialogue is over," reiterating the Trump administrations goal of regime change in Venezuela.

Meanwhile in a move that looks ominous for the Venezuelan people, Maduro shows no sign of backing down even as it appears factions in the military are abandoning him.

Maduro to Trump through the media, "who do you think you are emperor of the world."

Without digging into this thing, I recall it started with the Venezuelan govt
expropriating farm holdings. They started out by confiscating farms that
were over 1,000 hectares. Like Zimbabwe these were "given" to the "poor"
but still belonged to the govt.. Then Venezuela confiscated farm holdings
that were only 500 hectares ---- and you can see the end of that country's
agriculture. Same thing could start to happen in Sth Africa this year.

Under Socialism there can be no private farms, no private business, in fact
no power outside of the govt itself. This is written in Marxism itself, and as
Lenin soon discovered, is a recipe for disaster.
Same disaster each time it is tried.

That second video. Nice looking woman! Pity she has a
    Marxist slant on the world.
It mystifies people why Nazism is so objectionable to
people, but wearing Che Guevara t-shirts or speaking
about "Uncle Mao" or "Uncle Joe" is not objectionable.

Communist Russia also started WWII. Russia began
railroading prisoners to death camps like cattle long
before Hitler. Russia began gassing prisoners in the
back of trucks too (an early Nazi experiment.)
But unlike the Nazis, the communists could kill in
the tens of millions. The total death toll of Communism
is nearly three times greater than all the misery from
the death camps and war itself of the Nazis.

Recall that journalist who threw his shoe at George Bush Jnr?
I think we can all applaud the guy, in a way. But fact be told,
had he done that to the murderous Sadaam Hussein, both
he and his family, and maybe his village, would have been
    tortured and murdered.
You can throw your shoe at anyone in Iraq now. It's free, or
at least, orders of magnitude freer than it was. And guess
what, no more wars, no more gassing, no more secret
nuclear bomb factories. Millions of lives have been saved.

This is a simplification. Certainly no power outside the government itself is wrong:

Marx: concept of ownership implies that some form or another of ownership must exist in all productive societies, i.e. a productive society without any form of ownership whatsoever is an impossibility. Marx gives three definitions of ownership which are equivalent. The earliest definition comes from 1844 Manuscripts where ownership is defined as embracing both relations: "the relation of the worker to work and to the product of his labor and to the non-worker, and the relation of the non-worker to the worker and the product of his labor."

Later in The German Ideology, Marx gives the following definition: "ownership is the relations of individuals to one another with reference to the material, instrument and product of labor." Lastly, in the Grundrisse, he says, "we reduce this property to the conditions of production". These three definitions are consistent with Marx's position in Capital where he argues that the objective appearance of ownership as a relation between things only belies the underlying reality of its existence as a social relation between producers.

Marx was talking about production though there was always debate amongst the 19th century theorists about property

What is being stolen right now is Marxism.
Marxism gives you ultimate POWER. You
have power of life and death over your
subjects, and all the wealth of the nation
is yours. No political system has even given
    people more power than Marxism.

Maduro needs to tighten his grip much more
effectively - like Marxists did in Cambodia,
Vietnam, Cuba, Russia and China. Trouble is,
he can't do that in the 21st Century. He relies
upon the military, and was forced to bribe them
with control over the nation's oil.

And this statement utterly terrifies me.
If you go back to the monarchs of the medieval period
you could say they were dictatorships - but in fact their
power was tempered by the Church, the Nobility, the
    Merchants etc..

Someone said that sending Lenin to Russia in that
sealed train was like "injecting poison into the heart
    of Russia"
I don't just agree with that statement, it's actually a
    proven fact of history.

Totalitarianism means you control everything, right
down to the boy scouts (sorry, can you say 'boy'
scouts anymore? or have the cultural Marxists got
    control of them too?)

Read an article about an East German family who
had a jam factory in their family for generations. It
was taken from them by the communists. Communists
knew how to make jam better? But more importantly
to Communists, no-one but them would make jam, or
anything else. The hubris of that amazes me.

And this is where the killings start. As Marx put it, the
ruling "bourgeois" must be "made impossible"
He left his followers to interpret that as they will.

Venezuela is not a socialist country. Chavez would have liked it to be but it is not. It is a mixed economy basically what the UK used to be. Mind you I did hear tales in the 70's that you were thinking of attacking us. If you do not believe the people of a country have the right to vote in who they want to govern them, then you do not agree with democracy. If you believe in supporting death squads as the US has done repeatedly in this area then you believe in supporting death squads. I was brought up to support Democracy and oppose Oppression. I have not changed from this position.

Given the death toll of Communism world wide, I
put it to you that America has not done enough
    to stop it.

Trying to excuse mass murder by claiming others have done it gets you off nothing. Mass murder is mass murder and as bad whoever does it.

True. America did fight Nazism, ultimately.
And it did a reasonably good job in stamping it out.
But WWII wasn't just started by the Nazis, it was
also started by the Communists in 1939.
And the Communists taught the Nazis a lot about
totalitarian style govt, death camps, gassing of
prisoners and even race war (Stalin hunted down
    Poles and Finns, for instance.)
So why didn't America defeat Stalin? Why did
America allow Communists to rule Cuba? Why
didn't America save the lives of 80,000,000
Chinese by fighting Mao? Why didn't America
hunt down all the Pol Pots of the world and
bring them to justice? Probably because they
didn't have the stomach for the fight.

he is a member of the Popular Will party:

Popular Will (Spanish: Voluntad Popular; VP) is a centrist social-democratic political party in Venezuela admitted into the Socialist International in December 2014, founded by former Mayor of Chacao, Leopoldo López, who is its national co-ordinator.

    https://sputniknews.com/latam/201902021072067969-venezuela-traitor-general/

The Venezuelan military has characterised General Francisco Esteban Yanez Rodriguez' decision to switch sides and recognise Guaido as a betrayal of the highest order. In a post on one of its official Twitter accounts, the armed forces stressed their continued loyalty to the Maduro's government.

"We in the Armed Forces will not put up with such actions. The Venezuelan Air Force remains loyal to our president, and we will prevail in spite of such traitors," the military said, posting an image of Yanez with the word 'TRAITOR' written across the picture in bold red letters.

Other officers and military departments similarly attacked Yanez over his desertion, with the air force's official account accusing him of being an "unworthy man of arms" who has "betrayed" his oath of allegiance and "kneels before imperialist demands."

The account of the country's military flight training centre insisted that "for every traitor, thousands of patriots will emerge who will know how to defend Venezuela."

Funny how right wingers support the idea of military foreign intervention in order to bring down a government but insist on 2d Amendment rights to keep government from intervening in their lives.

The military was bought off with control of the oil industry.
It's time the military started being loyal to its own citizens.

So how many other countries have supported this new govt?
My country, Australia, now supports the revolution. Nothing
    to do with any constitution.

My post has nothing to do with Australia. It is about right wing hypocrites and their political double standards.

.... and you think the opposition isn't bought and paid for??

This is a blatant coup attempt formented by the US and its poodles. The "opposition" boycotted the last election because it could not win. Yet, against this background, Guiado has the nerve to say "I swear to formally assume the national executive powers as acting president of Venezuela to end the usurpation ... "

    Irony much?
