Unarmed self defense is better then an arsenal of guns IMO. No license needed and you have it with you 100% of the time.
Nothing more than utter nonsense, presented on the part of one who has no understanding of how the real world works. Except for the fact that such is not the case. In many states the type of knives best suited for fighting are prohibited to a degree even greater than firearms.
If the armed criminal is armed, the chances are that he/she will shoot before the victim will have a chance to draw.
False, there are hundreds of reports annually where armed criminals where shot or detained by armed citizens.
Your living in a fantasy world in which is surrounded by guns; that's not the real world no matter how much you paint it. Maybe in your state you feel you need a ten inch gravity knife to engage someone in a fight but any knife can kill or disable an attacker. A simple course in self-defense can go a long way in fighting off an attacker as well. A women has plenty of options besides the use of guns.
What about criminals who are detained by non-armed citizens? There must be hundreds if not thousands of examples of that annually as well.
I wouldn't even credit 'most'. My experience with women who own firearms, is that they picked them out themselves (some in pink, lord help us), and for several of them, the bigger the better. I would think your comment might be applicable to the 75+ crowd, when women didn't have to think about defending themselves in the same respect as they do today.
Martial arts and knives require being up close and personal. That is where a woman is on the losing side against a male in even iffy physical condition based on size, bulk and weight. A gun can defend outside of arm's reach, which is safer for the intended victim.
That has been changing over the past decade. Where once in the CC and advanced training courses I taught were filled mostly with young to mid age white men, my courses are now comprised with a wider cross section that includes more women, blacks, and gays of all ages; as it should be the case. We even now structure courses for women, taught by women, and even one series structured for couples coordinated self defense, including covering team planning for coordinating home defense. One aspect we stress at every level is the value of situational awareness and mental readiness that can provide an edge against those predators looking for easy soft blissfully unaware targets.
It is ultimately the state of the united states. Accept it, deal with it, and move on. Why is a knife believed to be a superior defensive alternative to a firearm? Explain such. Such courses require years of dedicated physical and mental practice to become proficient at, and there is nothing to stop an attacker from taking the same course and learning how to counter what might be encountered. Therefore they are not viable alternatives. Such does not mean the so-called "plenty of options besides the use of firearms" are viable or effective, however. And since effectiveness is the determining factor, firearms are the default best course of action available.
There are very few cases where a non-armed citizen did well up against an armed criminal, most become statistics as victims or dead.
Women make up one of the largest markets in new handgun ownership sales, and the firearms industry is listening to them when it comes to what they want, the NRA has also seen a surge in women wanting to become certified firearms instructors, these women understand their is a new market in training women who would prefer to train with a female instructor, versus the traditional male instructors. There is a range in Ft Myers that holds female only training class's run by two female contract instructors, the range provides the training room and excludes males from their pistol range on certain evenings.
Concealed carry with a permit or without. It’s a huge difference. We have constitutional carry. Any breathing humanoid is carrying a gun. Fortunately, with this inept crew and the vast number of trees, gun fire in our neighborhood seldom results in anyone getting hurt. Really, it’s all about density. We can have our Wild West rules because they’re aren’t many people. In crowded areas, it’s a huge problem.
The poster used the term "frail" in the original post I responded to; I certainly didn't mean a woman in her 30's. Perhaps in your neck of the woods, more women carry then where I live but that's my experience.
Maybe that's the way it is in your neck of the woods, but not where I live. It makes no noise when being used, doesn't jam like a gun can, doesn't require the use of bullets, does not require much maintenance, is cost effective and is easily concealed. There are self-defense courses which women can take that require little proficiency and are very effective at stopping an attacker and if the attacker has taken the same course the playing field will be even. I disagree; guns have their use and place; having other options at your disposal are critical to fending off an attacker.
Most of the victims or dead would have been dead in most circumstances since there'd be no time to react.
There's a restaurant over in Glades I have breakfast at a few times a week, there is a couple of females I'm guessing about 30 or so who come in there for breakfast as well, sometimes with a couple of guys. Two weeks back they reopened and on Wednesday I stopped by, both of the ladies where there, one walked to the window to pay the tab and I noticed just behind her right hip was a S&W M&P 9 Subcompact, I guess when she got in or out of her chair her t-shirt raised up and became stuck on top of the gun and the S&W having a very unique looking stock was how I knew what the model was. I walked up behind her and just to the right I commented in low voice "nice gun, that's a M&P 9," she turned toward me reached back and suddenly realized, she was carrying openly, she lowered her shirt and asked if I was a police officer and I assured her I wasn't, I could see she was puzzled, why would someone who is not a cop, walk up to someone with a gun and politely let them know they could see it? She asked again "your really not a police officer," I assured I was not, I just wanted to point out in Florida open carry is not allowed, unless it's accidental, a change in the law we worked hard to enact. You want to bet she never makes that mistake again?
I do know that when armed intruders enter a house or store blazing away with their guns, your chances of firing back are very limited, especially if you cannot get to your guns before they open fire.
I have no problem with anyone’s grammar. But, I’d make sure it was perfect if I post a criticism of anyone else. These jokers are not cops now. Citizens arrest ? ...none of the characteristics were present. “individuals can only make arrests when they've personally witnessed the criminal behavior and the breach has just occurred or there's a strong likelihood that the breach will continue.“
Based on that statement, you really don't know much about home invasions or the reality of defending a home against such an intrusion,
