Police in Los Angeles and Oakland clashed with pockets of violent protesters intent on wreaking havoc following the verdict in a high-profile court case that saw the killer of a black youth declared ‘not guilty.’
    Follow RT's live updates.

A number of protesters were taken into police custody Monday night after the LAPD declared an unlawful assembly shortly before 10 pm on Monday night in the Crenshaw district.

The scene along Crenshaw Boulevard and adjacent streets was chaotic as rioters set fires, assaulted bystanders, and vandalized cars and businesses, authorities said.

Police estimated that up to 150 people were engaged in acts of civil disobedience in the Crenshaw area.

LAPD reported that it arrested a total of 13 individuals and Oakland police detained nine.

Earlier Monday, a group of protesters stormed a Wal-Mart on Crenshaw Boulevard as guards hurried to close the security gates. A short time later, LAPD officers wearing helmets and carrying batons swarmed the store to disperse the looters, The Los Angeles Times reported.

Some of the protesters hurled chunks of concrete at officers on Vernon Avenue, the LAPD said. No injuries were reported.

The LAPD declared a tactical alert at approximately 9 p.m. local time, which requires that off-duty officers remain on duty when their shifts end to assist with high-priority calls.[IMG]

The eruption of violence created a “nightmare” for local commuters as automobiles were trapped around Leimert Park and bus service was cancelled on Crenshaw and Martin Luther King Jr. boulevards, Metro reported.

The LAPD has warned it has 300+ officers have been deployed and it will take a strict approach to people who come out to the Crenshaw area tomorrow.

There had also been reports that a masked protester attacked a waiter with a hammer-like object in Oakland.

The violence comes in the wake of a murder case that polarized the nation along racial lines in the death of Trayvon Martin. Defense lawyers argued that Martin, 17, attacked George Zimmerman, who responded by shooting and killing the teen in apparent self-defense.

The prosecution attempted to portray the actions of Zimmerman, 29, who is Hispanic, as racially motivated as he “stalked” and targeted Martin because he was black, they said.

What was that being claimed by yourself, about no riots occurring in the wake of the George Zimmerman verdict?

Irrelevant. Can't just murder a US citizen because they aren't complying with you.

    also irrelevant
it is the very definition of murder, no matter how badly you big government fascists want it NOT to be.

Lol, do you know how far Oakland, CA is from Sanford FL. Funny you didn't post any riots happening there.

That started as a peaceful protest and not a riot, until the usual criminal element showed up.

Such a statement would hold greater credibility, if it were not for black individuals in the united states demonstrating an apparently collective, group-think mentality with regard to one another when it comes to being killed by non-black individuals. Protests, riots, demonstrations, movements, whatever the name of the mass public event may be, when they occur in cities, counties, communities, and even states that were not the scene of the incident in question, with those taking part acting as if they were at the epicenter of the event, it is very difficult to intellectually differentiate them, when they will not differentiate themselves. Whenever a black individual is killed by either a law enforcement officer, or a non-black individual, there is a sudden group rush to defend the honor of the dead individual, with loud, boisterous statements about how the dead individual never did anything wrong, even when the evidence of criminal activity is overwhelming and otherwise undeniable.

And yet when the criminal element chose to escalate the matter, those looking to engage in peaceful protest did not disperse and flee the scene, but rather took part in the criminal activity. They made no effort to apprehend the troublemakers, or otherwise identify them and aid law enforcement in putting an end to the matter. Such is the natural course of action when those involved live by the code of silence, who see others cooperating with law enforcement at traitors, who readily repeat the statement "snitches get stitches" showing that they are unwilling to do anything to help themselves or anyone else, and would rather contribute to criminal activity through their silence.

Such is the nature of things in the united states.

Why do I waste my time with someone who thinks he is an expert on black folks in America and you have probably never been to America. Have a nice day.

I said it, I sourced it. Being shot in the back, or being shot while unarmed and not resisting... you're just whining and splitting peas.
