"The demographics of suicide-related gun violence overall skew heavily toward white men, who make up 79 percent of all firearm suicide victims and about 60 percent of total gun deaths in the U.S.... "Joe Plenzler, a Marine Corps combat veteran and gun owner, said, 'There's no silver bullet to identifying and preventing all suicides before they happen, but the NRA and gun industry are contributing to an epidemic of self-inflicted violence. When 20,000 Americans every year die by suicide with a gun, those profiting from the sale of the product must do more. Instead of producing self-aggrandizing, fear-mongering propaganda that calls for violence against protesters and the press; these groups should actually focus on the safety and well being of their own members and customers, many of whom are veterans. Despite representing only about eight percent of the nation's population, veterans account for nearly twenty percent of America's suicide victims. Combating veteran suicide is an ongoing fight we should all be engaged in. If more education and new ERPO laws can make a difference, we owe it to our veterans and their families to take action.' " source The callous response of many on this board will probably be that they don't care about suicide victims.
"Instead of producing self-aggrandizing, fear-mongering propaganda that calls for violence against protesters and the press; these groups should actually focus on the safety and well being of their own members and customers, many of whom are veterans." How? Instruct purchasers not to use them to kill themselves?
What exactly is either the NRA, or the firearms industry, supposed to do in this matter that would contribute to an actual, meaningful reduction in suicides committed with a firearm? How exactly are they currently contributing to the violence that is supposedly already occurring?
As usual Galileo posts pure hogwash and little fact. The Truth is most returning Veterans do NOT use Guns to commit suicide, most die due drug interactions.
calling suicides "gun violence" is a bogus effort by the anti rights coalition to pad their numbers in order to instigate hate towards a constitutional right.
Suicide is not relevant to discussions concerning US gun control because unless you can confiscate every gun, the normal criminal solution of punishment is worthless as a deterrent to suicides maybe that is why their average test scores are so much higher? the stupid kids who do poorly on exams off themselves while in our country, drop outs breed at higher rates than smart people
Yes. A man is the victim of a heart attack. A person is the victim of a stroke. And a person is the victim of crippling depression that leads to suicide. It is absolutley heartless to characterize it any other way
A person cannot be a victim of suicide...... not by definition. A person can be a victim of depression. That depression can lead to suicide. But make no mistake about it, they are not victims of suicide.
So what ? If a bloke is going to commit Suicide, what of it ? Take away his guns and he will commit Suicide anyway. Those determined to commit Suicide do so anyway... ... Tell us again how Japan is soooooo much better because they have no guns, yet Suicide rates are off the charts, esp young people, teens..... Suicide has no causal relationship to guns something you do not seem to understand.
Actually the evidence says the opposite. In the US....we are talking about americans...states with the most lax gun laws have the highest suicides. Over and over again year after year
BS opinion quote. People that want to commit suicide will commit suicide, the gun didn't make them do it.
