They do need PC to DEMAND ID under threat of arrest. Else the officer violates the 4th amendment under color of law. They could have just complied and the incident would have been over. It would mean voluntarily surrendering their rights to the officer.

I'm sorry I specifically said "vague" to the poster because i was roughly outlining a scenario where reasonable suspicion is at hand. Please read what I said again as my scenario isn't the one OP listed.

I'm unaware what the radio traffic was that led up to this, so I'm sure not gonna say they were "walking while black" or anything like that. What people are missing is you can be doing nothing at all wrong and have NO idea what has happened around you that could mean you look exactly like someone who just committed a crime.

Can you tell me the race of the suspect for the stolen vehicle?

But only one had a legal obligation to the other that they violated.

You're aware that making fun of people's names is what we DO here, right?

I'd stay away from threads mentioning Trump and Harris. Or old ones involving Anthony Weiner. Ah, those were the days ...

Which could have been quickly resolved. I don't get the personal offense just because a police officer asked for you ID.

There is a Facebook discussion going on in my group because someone complained about HOW DARE that Walmart employee want to see my receipt. I have no problem with it but did ask the person one time how come sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. She told be that if you have unbagged items they check because often people forget to scan things. Or if you have a container that is not see through they will stop and open it to make sure there is nothing in it. I find it perfectly reasonable and if I have something unbagged in cart I just have my receipt handy and do not take it as some personal offense. No you don't have to show them, you can walk out and unless they have some other reasonable suspicion, camera footage or an associate saw you steal something and they report it to person at the door, they can't detain you. But those people are not making a lot of money doing a boring job which helps keep the cost down so why not just be nice and show the receipt. Same with the police, they are actively looking for a criminal and if they can eliminate me by showing my an ID I show it.

Well if you continue to walk away when an officer asks you to stop, which is the case here, then you might be subject to resist and arrested.. If you're innocent "My experiences" just comply, show ID and go on about your business, then again I don't come from a long list and history of crime, murder and violence with police and neighborhood citizens either..

Why? Too bad we don't have body can footage of the entire encounter.
If I find myself suddenly in a crime scene investigation area and the police ask me for my identification why would I refuse?

And you do know about Terry Stops. I don't know what info this officer was working on but were it me and I didn't knob whether there was a BOLO was out for someone with my description I would certainly want to clear the matter up on the spot. How about you?

What would their ID solve? Would showing their ID mean they couldn't have stolen the car? Would not having your ID mean you stole the car?

Want a list? It would show if that person was wanted on outstanding warrants, if said person had a criminal history of vehicle theft, if this person had mental health interactions with the police, I could go on for days.

Sorry but you need reasonable suspicion to do all those things you mentioned. Cops can ask for your ID, but if they don't have reasonable suspicion, you can tell them to f*** off.

Cop movies are different than real life. Unfortunately, in the real world, people have rights against unreasonable search and seizure.

What was the BOLO that went out on this crime? Start there so you don't look like you're pretending to know the law or what police can or cannot do. I'm pretty sure I posted the definition of both reasonable suspicion and probable cause.

Why would you want to tell them to F off? What does that solve other than being a duck and making their job harder?

    Because they need reasonable suspicion.
