I wasn't there, I'll admit, but in Inside the Third Reich, the memoir of Albert Speer, it says Hitler remained in the church until his suicide.

I don't feel this thread is about Christianity or Islam, it's about a geopolitical struggle for power, position and control. Rather than discussing the religion of Islam which is the oldest religion on earth and the largest as well having 1.8 billion adherents, I think it's best to stick with the topic which is the withdrawal of troops from Syria.

Last weekend, Trump reached an agreement with Turkey President Erdogan to sell the Turks 3.5 billion dollars worth of patriot missile defense and it's possible that may have played a role in this abrupt decision to withdrawn U.S. troops from Syria. This may also be a gift by Trump to Putin. U.S. withdrawal from Syria is crucial for Vladimir Putin. Russia needed a stronghold in that part of the world and Putin ran out of places. Syria was his last best hope and the U.S. was the last best option to stop him. Syria and Russia have signed agreements to give the Russians an air base and a naval base.

Trump seems to be giving a lot away for free by withdrawing abruptly, and we all know Trump doesn't give away anything unless he gets something in return. The Trump administration and spokespeople like Sarah Sanders and Kellyanne Conway claim that ISIS is defeated in that area. They're only partially correct. There's no more than a two thousand in that area of Syria where the U.S. coalition has been focused but there's tens of thousands of ISIS fighters around Idlib, Syria and they will once again gain a stronghold once the U.S. moves out. This is going to be a big problem going forward for the U.S., Jordan and Israel for years to come.

I ask, what is the U.S. and Trump getting for this? We seem to have abruptly walked away from the table before the table even started the bidding.

    The joke is on Russia.

Now Russia owns Syria and Syria and the jihadist becomes Russia's problem.

Putin is going to have to raise taxes or make cuts in government spending.

Well no, the joke is on everyone else but Russia, Syria and Iran. Hezbollah has an advanced missile arsenal, Hezbollah is better prepared than ever to inflict maximum damage. Israel is a small country with limited infrastructure. It has one international airport, a handful of major power stations, and an electrical grid that is vulnerable to attack.

Iran and its Lebanese ally, Hezbollah, have obtained advanced missiles that are designed to exploit those weaknesses. For Israeli security officials, the nightmare scenario is that these weapons may become accurate enough to hit Israel’s civilian and military infrastructure, paralyzing daily life in the country. The threat they pose has already drawn Israel deeper into the Syrian conflict, and promises to fundamentally alter the next war with Hezbollah, a war that could come sooner than expected.

'Bibi' can't be very happy with Trump but Netanyahu publicly says he respects Trump's decision and he has vowed that Israel will defend itself but the departure of the U.S. troops will clear field for Iranian entrenchment.

Apparently our Pentagon and military commanders no longer have opinions that matter to the COC so I guess we should just do the barbed wire thingy at our borders.

    So much for military superiority.

When was the last time the Pentagon got :flagus: out of any deployment?

Let the Russians or the Saudis deal with ISIS.
Neither can be too happy about ISIS.
    How about the French?

Individual-1 is sure giving Putin a dream come true. He now owns Syria and can use it to station his military forces in warm waters, and together with Iran can exert a hell of a lot more influence over the entire region.

Yep, hand Syria, Iran and Russia a strategic victory. Way to tweet decisions on national security policy that contradicts everything the US has said and done in the past.

Presidents under siege usually go to war. This one is prematurely ending it and handing multiple enemies a massive strategic victory.

He also handed Erdogan carte blanche to go after the kurds (not that the others won't too).

He has the authority to do it, but it seems he's trying to manufacture a victory by claiming that ISIS is defeated, despite the 30,000 fighters still operational. (That's the Pentagon/CIA/DIA consensus).

Amazing American Abdication of world leadership in the interests of the president's domestic legal troubles or part of that quid pro quo everyone is talking about. Afterall, he just lifted the sanctions on manafort's butt buddy - hmmmmm.

Perfect path to american greatness. Retreat and hunker down. Why its the very epitome of what made America great and guaranteed to work - believe trump.

    Pretty damn puny strategy.

We have been fighting futile wars in the ME for nearly 20 years! Have they made America great? Have they made the ME a better place? I say NO on both counts!

    What do you say?

Like there ain't any other bad actors trying to screw the place up for their own purposes.

Retreat just hands the place over to the bad actors. I bet the Iranian regime is celebrating their victory tonight. And vladdie and Bashir are clinking the vodka glasses.

Yep, I'd say this is a great move to make America weak again. As for the decades long clustermuck, it seems that the $700 billion in military spending doesn't guarantee victory. Course you could always nuke the bastards.

Who knew the strongest nation in history would turtle like that, essentially outta the blue.

Who knew that MAGA was to be achieved by lowering the bar for greatness at home and around the world.

I see all the left wing war mongers are up in arms. I guess there can never be enough American blood on the ground for them.

The purpose of going into Syria was to defeat ISIS. ISIS has been destroyed. They have been decimated and driven from 99% of their holdings. Mission over. Now the question becomes why should we stay? Why should the American people spend billions of dollars and risk American lives in this hell hole? What can be accomplished?

When will the left learn we are not the world's police force. We should not be spending American lives or treasure to provide security for any nation.

Trump the peace maker is again true to his word. He has the courage to defy the hawks and left wing war mongers and do what is right. He should get the Nobel Peace Prize.

The bad actors have always had the place. Who are the good actors?

I knew. We've done so before in Vietnam. How is America weakened by not pouring American blood and treasure into Syria? I am hoping we bug out of Afghanistan next.

Bombing people in the ME or elsewhere does not make America great.

Nobel Chamberlain Prize, indeed. Let em have it, it isn't our concern.

Just read that Turkey is going to spend $4 billion to buy Patriot Missiles. Oh well, I guess the Kurds were sold out - but were they? From what I read the US is leaving Northern Syria, but Raqqa and Deir ez zur are not in Northern Syria - and that's where the oil is - and that where the US wants to create it's Kurdistan. :oldman:

OBAMA sure thought it did - he bombed the crap out of that region.

ISLAM is the problem, the teachings of Jihad are the problem, acceptance of an invisible man who lives in the sky is the problem.

The strategic mistake was in defeating ISIS. We took a strong player off the board. But there are still enough of America's adversaries to fight among themselves quite effectively.
