Have you ever looked at how a SEAL Team or SEAL Platoon is organized and armed ?

    No "Rule of Three."

Yes, aware of that. I was referring to your infantry 101 comment earlier

Even Marine infantry tactics are different than Army infantry tactics. Ask Mushroom who was a Marine grunt for many years before shipping over to the Army.

When I was with Sub Unit One 1st ANGLICO, I was TAD a couple times to the Army's Americal Div. in the Nam assigned to an army infantry company or platoon to provide NSFS for the army. The first thing I noticed was the army infantry tactics were different from the Marines and the army used fire support differently.

When I was a kid (anyone under 25) I could take orders from azzholes and not be fazed by it.

    Now I can't anymore.

I am guessing that age 25 is why they wait to promote you to azzhole (captain O-3 or E-6 enlisted).

@ArmySoldier you should not speak for the Navy. They don't like it.

Sorry, but I must have missed learning of your credentials.

    What were you @Greataxe ?

Army, Navy, USMC, Coast Guard, USAF, or National Guard ?

    Just wondering.

Garrison is a challenge to keep personnel motivated.

I used P/T (physical training) to do so and so the Captain put me in charge of it.

We did Tuesday and Thursday morning runs in P/T shorts, T-shirts, and boots.

I took them up a steep hill, with the NCO's at the tail end collecting the stragglers.

This was a great job for the NCO's who smoked tobacco and could not keep up either.

Then at the top of the hill we turned around and collected everyone on the way back down.

The NCO's led the run on the way back down, and I brought up the rear and made sure everyone was running.

    It worked quite well.

I got the reputation for being the most motivated macho lieutenant in the unit.

A general gave me a letter of appreciation.

I saved it with my DD-214.

O3 at 25? I think the youngest I've met was 26. I think they are promotable at 26 (assuming they commissioned at 22). The youngest O3 I've met was 29.

I'd put my money on Marine Force Recon.
No, I wasn't. After we were done, they were still going.
It helped if you were crazy....:D

Sorry for the confusion. My last sentence meant to read the average of the O3s I've met were 29.

    Haven't had any coffee today.

I'm sure there are plenty around 26-28. I just haven't met many. I also tend to avoid any O3s whenever possible.

The backbone of any force is simply the bone headed grunts.

This is true in the Army (we were taught to mention the US Army first in our toasts out of respect for George Washington and because the Army was the first force organized at Tun Tavern by Benjamin Franklin) as well as in the Marines (the 3rd to be organized, after the Navy, for the purpose of sharpshooters on sailing warships).

Not SEALs, not USMC Recon, not Green Berets, etc.

    Semper Fi.

Well lieutenants cannot avoid O-3's because they must report to them.

Every O-3 I ever reported to was a total flaming azzhole.

    The O-4's were 50%.

The O-5's and O-6's were all good.

I knew one O-9, one O-8, and one O-7 and these old men were great.

I also knew Zumwalt's kid before the kid died. He was a great guy too.

The question wasn't the backbone - it was who was the baddest.

    and Achors Oy Vey. :D

The baddest is whichever unit dominates the battlefield at the time.

Sometimes it is the regular infantry grunts. This has been true since the times of ancient Rome. Alexander's Macedonian cavalry preceded them. Egyptian and Hittite chariots preceded them.

Sometimes it is the tank regiments. The British invented these during WW1 and the Germans perfected them during WW2.

The rest who think they are bad are just show boats.

I avoid all officers when possible. I just assume every LT is fresh out of college without a deployment.

Anytime somebody else is shooting at you then you are going to be quite stressed out.

Does not matter who you are or what you are doing.

Basically you have to get your azz out of the line of fire and somehow outflank your enemy and kill him/her before they kill you.

You can be shot at while in a special forces unit (taken as a whole -- special here having the meaning of specially picked and specially trained rather than regularly trained), a regular infantry unit, a tank unit, and aviation unit, an arty unit, an engineer unit, or a supply unit.

    Samee-same G/I.

mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa.

but by my 3rd year I was starting to get smarter and by my 4th year I was booted up to a JAG unit processing miscreants.

The only grades I know for the Army are 4-F and Section 8.

I was chaptered out of the Army National Guard during Basic the first time. Enlisted 13F and then while I was in training, found out the unit was shut down and there was no money to reclass me in my state.

So I went to another state, enlisted again (had to get a waiver which was a pain, took like 6 months), and entered 11B
