They can know it intellectually, and yes, even take field trips. But no child should ever be asked by a school to engage in religion (whether their own, or someone else's).

Teaching comparative religion is fine. IF equal weight is given to all religions taught, and there is zero compulsion to participate. If schools are making children 'pray', that's an outrageous breach.

    they did what?

and praying (for the vast majority of religious people) IS a practical exercise. it's just going through certain motions. are these kids being taken to hindu temples and asked to carry out rituals?

They don't. they show them how Muslims pray. My ten year old grand daughter can sit in a full lotus but trust me she is not enlightened.

And made to genuflect etc, in the Catholic tradition.

    Very Good Question.

I'm seeing two different versions. One says they were made to carry out the motions.

I thought the mods deleted threads, once they were unequivocally shown to be completely predicated on a lie, or a fake news story, or a scam meme... how is this thread still up?

Yeh, they're being taken to those tantra temples in India and then made to ****.:p

If if take a Christian kid into a mosque and he asks do muslims kneel down to pray and I say, "no, it's different" and he asks how, is it more instructive to just show him or to actually have him do it? Remember the old adage; I read and I discern. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.

Hear, hear, For all we know the "field trip" photo was entirely staged. Think on it. It might be topical as all get out but if you were a teacher who had enough problems with nutcase parents would you take your class on a field trip to a fracking MOSQUE??

maybe, if the class was a class of religious studies, or was focused on that topic at the time in its curriculum.. As another poster pointed out: he went to a field trip to a bakery once... yet he didn't become a baker...

Of course it's Islamophobic when you demand children may not have a school trip to a mosque because you don't want to learn about Islam and rather stick to some iffy hate doctrine you found on the internet.

Which is fine when it comes to anything but religion. Children should not be asked to participate in ANY religious ceremony. Religion is not important, and does not require experiential knowledge. It doesn't even require field trips. Save that all of that time and money and focus for literacy and numeracy!

It's Christianphobic when parents don't allow their kids to attend Church field trips. It's Conservatiphobic when parents don't allow their kids to be taught abstinence in Sex Ed.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you're unaware that using 'phobic' to demonise stuff you don't approve of, is very out of date. It's like a beehive hairdo in 1990.

And how did the Muslim kids enjoy their Catholic rituals? Were they made to kneel down and recite the Hail Marys?

Were Catholics in a position of being targeted by bigots? I mean, let's at least get a little context, here. The purpose is to learn about something in order to help erase some of the nasty propaganda against the Muslims living among them. This represents a form of advocacy...advocacy for one group is not oppression of another, nor is absence of advocacy for that other group oppression of it.

But, don't get me wrong, Islam is the motherlode of bad ideas. But, similarly, there is a reason we have an NAACP and not a NAAWP.
