Its a pay to play system - if you play (along with the Big Money Interests) - you get paid , and everyone knows it. It may be a cushy lobbyist position for a General - a seat on the BOD of some corporation for some bureaucrat .. there are many ways to get paid.

What you end up with is a somewhat self regulating system - that makes decisions favorable to the big money interests. It is not like everyone is on the payroll - nor is it some cabal or star chamber. It is the natural outcropping of self interest and greed. A few people who do not play along do not matter so long as the majority is in line.

Every once in awhile you get a lone voice calling out some nefarious practice ... say Price Fixing in the Drug industry. Everyone then points to that voice and says "Look Look - freedom of speech - what a great system we have". That lone voice is then drowned out by the cacophony on the take and the status quo continues. It is the natural outcropping of self interest and greed.

Would you be the one to run against a herd of stampeding bulls - shoot the goose that lays the golden eggs ? It is not easy - nor prudent politically in most cases.

Those that "don't play" are the exception - and the majority carry the day.

 

You're supposed to be paying NATO $2B annually. Are you saying Germany is paying nothing? I bet you'd love to see Germany with a powerful military again? Not gonna happen Sobo. The UN restricts Germany from having a powerful military for good reason. Germans tend to view themselves as superior to the rest of the world and believe they should rule the world. The problem with that Sobo is Germany does not have it's own energy source so it must rely on other countries. That is Germany's achilles heel and why Germany will never be a super power.

 

You get things wrong. Not pay NATO 2 billion per year. Its supposed we spend 2% GDP in our Military per year. That would be 80 billion €. We spend half of that and take 40 Billion from you. If this was in isolation - and not against a backdrop of other serious issues - it might not be so bad. The opposite however is true. Pulling out of the Iran deal was one thing - its not good for our integrity if one leader defaults on the obligations of the previous guy but - it is what it is.

What is right off the crazy train is then to implement sanctions - and then try and bully our allies into submission using the strongest of strong arm tactics short of going to war. The response was visceral - using the strongest possible language "You are messing with our sovereignty" from various EU nations .. Germany, France, Italy and so on. This is not in private - but in public.

The citizens of nations do not react well to bully tactics from other nations - and the consequences of this are already being felt. Our corporations - who used to be in the VIP line are now lucky to get into the line.

Nations all over the world are giving the US the royal middle finger (FU). This is unprecedented in modern history.

This is essentially what happens when you give folks free stuff. They will, invariably bite the hand that is feeding them. (well, you can argue it did in E Germany). And ever since reunification happened, and the Germans insisted that they still needed that protection, the US has, and continues to fund this science experiment.

And now, it exemplifies the rudeness of German political elite that have once again miscalculated the willingness and the tolerance of the US to ignore their poor performance and behavior. The German country aren't children to be disciplined, and they shouldn't forget that the US doesn't actually feel any residual benevolence in their regard. History shows us that they will, time and again, get it wrong. So, having a ready made response force there continues to maintain the peace in a region that (as demonstrated by several of the german posters here) will devolve into.

Try to turn tables and see it from our side. We have a 60 billion budget surplus each year. We spend it in new railroads, energy grids and so on. Thats far better for us.

And we have an axcellent weapon industry. We export and are a bigger weapon exporter than UK, China or Israel. By selling we make money, not by using it ourself.

The more nukes fall on your heads, the less nukes fall on our heads. Russia has like 1,300 active nukes’ if they spend 300 on Germany we will have less fatalities.
