I have 10,000 questions to ask for you: ...

    1. The Bible speaks of a city named "Jerusalem" .. There is a city named Jerusalem.. Ergo, the Bible must be bunk?

The existence of Jerusalem only proves the Bible if the existence of Moscow proves the Hunt for Red October.

Rome is independently confirmed to exist.

Any answer on whether the Quran and I Ching are true because they are in the Religious section?

I know. the Bible proves this.

the goofy part is you claiming the Bible isn't real but it specifically dates Rome's existence and reign down to the years it rose, fell and rose again and also ALL of the rulers it had.

    Harry Potter.

I believe the Greek word was "mythos" which basically meant a story, without the connotation of something that's not true that the word has acquired in modern times. The Etymology Dictionary says the general sense of an untrue story or rumor only dates to 1840.

No, it doesn't. The records of Rome's history are mostly from secular Roman historians, such as Suetonius's The Twelve Caesars, and Livy's Ab Urbe Condita, which covers the history of Rome from its founding until the time of Augustus. That calculation of the date of the founding of Rome comes from Varro. (Happy 2765, btw). I really doubt you're going to find the story of Romulus and Remus, sons of the god Mars, in the Christians' book.

And dude, seriously? Hate to break it to you, but the government does not dictate how Borders or Barnes and Nobles organize their shelves. And the exact categorization varies from store to store. For example, I've often seen the I Ching, Tao Teh Ching, Confucius, and so on filed under "Eastern Thought" or something similar, since they don't really fit neatly into western categories of religion and philosophy.

Think about it: If he was being serious, then he'd be risking his career. Of course he was joking around. Sane people will do that.

I'm not sure what statement of Clinton's you mean, could you help me out with a link or something? The only thing I remember him saying about UFO's off hand was that one line about how if the Air Force recovered an alien ship at Roswell, they didn't tell him about it, and he wanted to know.

In any case, my take on the subject is that UFO stands for unidentified flying object. As soon as you say that it's an alien ship, you've identified it, and therefore it isn't a UFO anymore. Putting aside the all tinfoiler silliness, there are some genuinely mysterious things that happen every once in a while, strange things are seen in the skies, and I think it's a really bad thing that we can't seem to separate those from all the nut cases out there and seriously look into them.

Knowledge of Rome predated its being written in the Bible.

This is where you bull(*)(*)(*)(*) logic breaks down:

Just because a book isn't true, that doesn't mean it can't discuss real world things. For instance, Tom Clancy regularly talks about real world places and people in his novels, but the events of them are fictional. The Bible is the same. Rome, Jerusalem, Egypt, King David, Soloman, and (probably) Jesus are people or places that really existed. However, unless there is some kind of independent comfirmation (like what we have with Roman history) then we have no reason to believe that Jesus conducted miracles, Soloman used demons to build a temple, and that David killed a literal Giant with a sling.

By all means, quote the scripture that covers the rise of Rome and all of its leaders.

Stop deflecting. You claim that the Bible must be true because you find it in the religion section and not the fiction section. Do you believe that the Quran is true because it is found in the religion section?

The History of mankind's existence is in the Holy Bible. You claim there were books pre-dating the Bible that explains mankind's existence, please post them. the thread is getting long in the tooth and I want you finally have some backup before the mods have to close it at 50 pages.

LOL..start at the book of ROMANS..

Don't be silly. I asked you WHY would it be in the religion section if it was fiction? shouldn't it be in the section with Dr. Suess??

YOU stop deflecting by asking a question with a question.

I think it's something of a losing battle to keep trying to insist that a UFO is simply an unidentified flying object rather than an alien craft. Our language has tended this way because UFO is easy to say and so often linked with the alien spacecraft idea anyway.

Regarding the Clinton quotation, it's something Lynx had mentioned earlier in the thread. As I recall, Clinton had made some remark about getting the truth about JFK and UFOs. Since he isn't a known kook and never has been, I'm reasonably certain he was joking, though I haven't looked up the source of the quotation or anything either.

There were books describing the existence of Rome that pre-dated the Book of Romans in the Bible. The Biblical authors already knew that Rome existed. The knowledge of Rome was not imparted to them by the Bible.

The existence of Rome no more proves the Bible than the existence of Mecca proves the Quran.

No. Bull(*)(*)(*)(*). You made the claim, you provide the evidence.

Provide DIRECT QUOTES to the scripture that has the entire history of the Rome and all of its rulers.

Religion =/= true. Just because something isn't lumped in with fiction, that doesn't instantly mean that it is true.

Unless you are willing to concede that the Quran must be true and that Mohammad really waqs God's last Prophet and Jesus wasn't God's son, because it is in the religion section too.

If ROME existed then you know who the ROMANS are in the Bible. they are the people of Esau/Edom. do you agree? If not, you are a confused individual.

Later. not now. I'm busy. I will remember this and come back and respond.

Why must you run from me? pitter patter of your feet I hear so loud.

I can't speak for all books, I can only speak for the Holy Bible. Now answer my question. why isn't the Bible in the Dr. Suess section?

    .

Find me a Roman archaeological source that describes their land as Esau/Edom and I will concede that point. An unsupported Biblical claim will not do for proof.

Because Christianity is a RELIGION and it get grouped with all other RELIGIONS regardless of whether or not they are actually true.

If you are trying to make the argument that Christianity must be true because it is in the Religion section, then you must also concede that the Quran, the I Ching, the Baghavad Gita, and Wiccan texts are also true BECAUSE THEY ARE IN THE SAME SECTION.

Do you concede that or not?

At the Barnes and Noble near my house, the Bible (one of the editions they have anyway) is in the Best Seller section. Not far down from Twilight.

LOL You have a point. I'm not really trying to change how people use the term UFO, just trying to point out that there's a genuine mystery there that may or may not involve aliens.

I did a little searching and I think I found the quotation you were thinking of. It's actually from a book by Webster Hubble, a former DOJ official in the Clinton White House, who claimed that Clinton said to him, "Webb, if I put you over at Justice I want you to find the answers to two questions for me. One, who killed JFK? And two, are there UFOs?"

The comment I was thinking of was from a speech given in Belfast in 1995,
"I got a letter from 13-year-old Ryan from Belfast. Now, Ryan, if you're out in the crowd tonight, here's the answer to your question. No, as far as I know, an alien spacecraft did not crash in Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947. And, Ryan, if the United States Air Force did recover alien bodies, they didn't tell me about it, either, and I want to know."

After he left office, Clinton also made a comment along the same lines in 2005 in Hong Kong.
"I did attempt to find out if there were any secret government documents that revealed things. If there were, they were concealed from me too. And if there were, well I wouldn't be the first American president that underlings have lied to, or that career bureaucrats have waited out. But there may be some career person sitting around somewhere, hiding these dark secrets, even from elected presidents. But if so, they successfully eluded meĀ…and I'm almost embarrassed to tell you I did (chuckling) try to find out."

So I think that Clinton did seriously try to find out if someone was keeping some sort of deep dark secret, but came up dry. But let's be honest, I bet every new President asks about UFO's, whether they'll admit it later or not. I know I would.

Heck yeah, it would be fun to be in the highest office of the nation and poke around asking questions about UFOs :D You could ask about the Bilderbergers and the Illuminati, too

If you want histories that predate the Christians' book, I already mentioned one, Livy's Ab Urbe Condita. Herodotus is generally considered the father of history as a separate subject. If you just want creation myths, there are tons and tons, mostly involving a sky god having sex with an earth goddess. The Babylonian version is a bit more interesting, it involves the god Marduk slaying the dragon Tiamet and slicing her body in half to form heaven and earth. The Hindu Vedas are extremely ancient holy texts, although I haven't read them and am not entirely sure exactly what's in them. So take your pick.

Actually, the Christian's book only came together in more or less the form it exists today in Constantine's time, Around 300 CE. Which makes it relatively recent as such things go. The Epic of Gilgamesh and the Illiad and the Odyssey are far, far, older.
