What, then, ARE the duties of the cops? If the job of a policeman isn’t to protect the innocent, then shut down all police depts!

Judge rules cops, schools had no duty to shield students in Parkland shooting lawsuit
A federal judge on Monday ruled that Broward County schools and the Sheriff’s Office were not legally obligated to protect and shield students in the shooting that occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., last February, according to a report in the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

Isn't that the right-wing mantra- 'you're on your own'?
Try thinking about your own duties in society.

Perhaps the ruling was paving the way for armed security at all schools. Would be interesting to see the political views of the judge and, perhaps, any connections to the NRA. I know, I know - conspiracy theorizing. But was my first reaction...

I guess the cops down there are just required to support the local doughnut shops. Good grief, does anyone have the sworn oath police officers and sheriffs are supposed to take before assuming their duties?

I think you all are misreading the ruling. All these agencies were being sued by survivors because the police failed to prevent it, and they're saying they weren't protected. The police are saying unless a student was in police custody, they had no obligation to protect them.

Sad yet unsurprising. Police exist to protect property. Not people.

In the heat of the moment I'm sure the thing going through his head was, sadly, "I'm close to retirement and I'm not dying for some kids that aren't mine". And I'm sure he knew them too, which makes it even more disturbing. Another cop would be the first one in and would have hunted Cruz down, so who knows.

That's not quite true. They are not saying the police failed to prevent it but that the officer that was there failed to do anything. This ruling is saying that that's correct, he didn't have any obligation to do anything.
So now the question is.....what's the point? Why have cops in the schools at all? Why arm teachers? Kids.....you're on your own.

A police officer is obligated to enforce laws, hence he is a law enforcement officer.
But imagine for one moment if he had defended the kids and one of the kids got hurt, he would be sued in a heartbeat.
Why do you think every town and city in the US is having a hard time recruiting someone to enforce the laws and risk getting sued when they do.
It's just not worth it anymore, glad I'm out.

This appears to be the Hill just blindly copy-pasting something that was reported in a local paper (which is unfortunately inaccessible in the UK). I wouldn't jump to any conclusions until/unless you read the actual judgement. It's not unknown for "journalists" to misinterpret legal rulings, especially when the misinterpretation makes a juicy headline.

Cops main duty is to act as a Slave Patrol to keep black people under control. Anything else is just incidental.

If the ruling is correct then the cop was unjustly fired (or forced to resign) and he should get his job back with full back pay and a letter of apology from the city.

    Warren v. District of Columbia

The police have no duty to protect a given individual unless some special relationship exists between them and said individual - confidential informant, etc.

    Old news.

Your ignorance of the laws runs nearly as deep as your blind partisanship.

Protect and Serve is being removed from partol cars and literature. Cops are ONLY required to enforce the law. The citizen is on his/her/alphabets own. I suggest a Sig P365 and a spare mag as a great protector of oneself or family. If you are not in one of "those states" move on up to a P226 or M11A1. For home use a AR15 with varmint ammo for minimal penetration works very nicely.

What stupid and disingenuous post. Did you even bother to do any other reading on what this is all about? The students of Parkland are try to cash in and sue everyone (the new American way). In the dismal of the law suit the judge rejected the students argument that the authorities failure to prevent the shooting violated the student's 14th amendment rights. This is not as simple as you are making this look. All the judge did is say that the police can't be held at fault for something they could not stop. Rightly so. If this law suit would stand how many law suits would follow. Hell even CNN had a good article about it. It is post like this with no real thought and research that gets things blown way out of proportion.

An AR15 is overkill for home use. That said, I expect top-notch professionalism from my local police, period, they are most certainly being paid as high-end professionals.

Holding cops liable for the success of their ability to police is absurd. Need to blame the criminal, and nobody else.

The police are to protect and defend. They failed. The complaints will be upheld on appeal, and the judge will be censured.
