The head says it and I mean it. It represents a holiday for emancipation of black slaves. Sounds great right? I mean it was a great day in our history. So why is it used to celebrate black culture? Which in America is a shameful joke right now anyway. Shouldn’t it be a holiday that is in celebration of all of humanity?

They give zero credit to the whites who were the only race that freed slaves world wide. Did blacks have some accomplishments, sure. But none of which would have been possible without whites who lost family lines to help them become free. We fertilized soil from the south to the north with our blood to free slaves. We economically hurt countries that would not abolish slavery. No other race in the world done that.

If this holiday is truly about emancipation why is that not part of the celebration or conversation? Why does it focus on African culture rather than the process actually taken? If we are suppose to learn from it why are we cherry-picking what is being taught?

Well I read such as this writer in USA Today

"Juneteenth is my favorite holiday. It’s the oldest known commemoration of the end of slavery in America and often brings people together who have not seen each other in years."
    https://www.usatoday.com/story/opin...experience-celebration-promotion/70324320007/

It was June 19, 1865 when a lowly major in the Union army posted a little notice that slaves in the occupied Confederate state of Texas were free. Something that was widely known already throughout the state. Slavery in the UNITED STATES WAS STILL LEGAL.

Slavery did not end in the United States until six months later. It had been legal in the United States all throughthe war.

We have Black History Month already why this day which in actuality has no significance?

It’s completely stupid and just another day for state and federal workers to not be productive.

The slaves in states that were still in rebellion as of January 1, 1863 were technically free via Lincoln’s executive order, known as the Emancipation Proclamation. Lincoln was concerned that his order would be revered after he left office. Hence he viewed that the passage of the 13th Amendment essential. Here is an 1864 presidential campaign piece.

It is an example of equity instead of equality. However, it harms nobody really. Let them have a celebration. You can celebrate whatever you like.

The only problem I really have with it is the dumb name. Can't they call it "19th of June" or "emancipation day"? The only reason for the name that I can figure is that is probably how the uneducated former slaves said it. So we're going to celebrate lack of education??? I refuse to acknowledge it unless they change the name.

Juneteenth… Quite possibly the dumbest holiday in the United States

Too bad it annoys you, though I can't say I'm surprised.

"We are not celebrating the history of Juneteenth. We are celebrating the symbolism of Juneteenth," said Leslie Wilson, professor of history at Montclair State University in New Jersey.

"The symbolism of Juneteenth is the transition from slavery to freedom."

Yes and slaves in the United States were still slaves as slavery was still legal in the United States and it remained legal in the United States all through the war.

Winter holidays are celebrated around the world by lots of different specific groups of people and individual people.

This post is about THIS specific celebration.

Ahhhhh the article I cited was about NOT making it for everybody

Don't whitewash Juneteenth: Black people shouldn't have to lose identity to promote holiday

...As Juneteenth approaches on Monday, a recent controversy in Greenville, South Carolina, shows we're still learning how to fully honor an event that was only made a federal holiday two years ago. Event organizers apologized in May after featuring a white couple on an advertising banner promoting "Juneteenth, An Upstate Celebration of Freedom, Unity, & Love.”

Thousands saw the ill-conceived ad, and some Blacks even called for a boycott. While the ad was surprising, I was more shocked to learn that some African Americans gave the ad the thumbs up...

    ...
Apology by Greenville Juneteenth organizers felt whitewashed
Juneteenth GVL founder and Executive Director Rueben Hays, who is Black, apologized – but only after some members of the board defended the banner, saying it was one of 50 ads aimed at reflecting diversity. In the apology, Hays said:

"Juneteenth GVL would like to apologize to the community for the presence of non-black faces on two flags representing Juneteenth. We acknowledge this mistake having been made and will correct the error quickly. This error was an attempt at uniting all of Greenville and, thereby, a slight oversight on one individual’s part that prevented us from fully embracing the rich potential and celebrating the depth of the black culture through the message and meaning of Juneteenth and for that, we apologize to you the entire community."

Hays whitewashed African American culture. It’s still mindboggling how he didn’t understand why placing white people on a banner representing Juneteenth was a problem from the beginning.

I can see the multicultural aspect of Juneteenth, but I think most people largely ignore that enslavment of one race would justify the enslavement of any race. Instead many people see Juneteenth as a "Black's Holiday". Sounds racist. After all, St. Patrick's Day isn't a federal holiday. Neither is Oktoberfest.

Juneteenth should be the day blacks thank the white people who died freeing them.

No other country had to fight to free slaves because US is the only place where people took up arms to defend slavery. But of course the civil war was not about slavery until Lincoln said it was in oder to turn the British navy around. In other words the civil war was already in full swing and was going to happen with or without slavery.

As for Junteenth, - it does not offend me one bit. Why should I care what other people choose to celebrate?

Is this really what you learned in school? If so, you have grounds for suing the school that handed you the diploma.
