But why are you okay with alcohol being legal? Withdrawing from alcohol is just as horrible as withdrawing from harder drugs such as heroin.

Because it's already legal, and at this point making it illegal would be more trouble than it'd be worth - doesn't mean that we need to legalize every drug just to be 'consistent'

And not nearly as many people have a desire to stick a needle full of heroin in their body, as have a desire to drink a Bud Light. Not to mention I don't think alcohol is as addictive for the majority of social drinkers, as many hard drugs are. I don't know of any "social heroin shooters". Seems like most of them are either homeless or street walkers who live solely to get their next high

Some people argue that if heroin was legal, clean needles would also be legal, and people wouldn't share dirty needles and spread AIDS and hepatitis. What's your response to those arguments?

It's totally legal to buy needles - if junkies are sharing needles it's not because 'needles are illegal', it's because they're so dependent that they just don't care and are only thinking about their next high

I believe legalizing drugs should be considered a Capital program under our form of Socialism because it can engender multibillion dollar pharmaceuticals building multimillion dollar labs which can discover better products at lower cost.

Supply side economics is supposed to be supplying us with better governance at lower cost.

Even if what you say is true, I still am against legalizing heroin. If heroin was legalized, then it's usage would increase, and more people would get AIDS and hepatitis.

Regulating drugs as a form of Commerce among the several States should require an FDA label on any drug on any market in the US.

ZWhen heroin was decriminalised in Portugal usage actually went down.

Better still would be to give Heroin free to registered addicts as long as it was consumed at a clinic which would be open 24 hours a day. The monetary savings to society freed from the vast amount of crime this generates would be immense.

Here are some facts related to deaths from drug overdoses.

One of the primary cause of drug overdose is "accidental" overdose as opposed to intentional overdose that would be associated with suicide.

A major problem with 'illegal" drugs is that "dosage" is unregulated so someone using heroin, cocaine or ecstasy has no idea about how "pure" the actual drug might be when they take it. It could be very strong and lead to an overdose or very weak which would lead the person to taking more in the future that could lead to an overdose if they come across a "stronger" version of the same drug.

Americans are going to use heroin, cocaine and ecstasy and the fact that these are illegal and unregulated creates a huge risk for the user. There would be far fewer accidental deaths if these drugs were legal and controlled substances than what we see with the unregulated black market furnishing these drugs to the consumers.

    That isn't the right question.

Why are other drugs illegal is the right question.

Free prophylactics and contraceptives could help lower our tax burden as well, along with a Post Office.

Another argument which people use in favor of legalizing heroin is that if heroin was legal, since it would be regulated, people would know how strong the dosage is (unlike in an unregulated illegal black market), and there would be far fewer overdoses. What's your response to this argument? Here's what Shiva TD said.

actually more would use clean needles, so the risk of disease spreed would lessen

I do not like people that use heroin, but I also do not like drunks, but I think both should be legal, if one commits a crime while on drugs or alcohol, then arrest them...

All drugs should be legal. Pot is already legal here in Wa.

think about that thought regulating drugs- kids already get there hands on drugs from the streets. Legalizing all drugs may bring more money to the us but it would be a lot easier for kids to get there hands on it

Because I don't feel I have any right to protect others from themselves. If they want to commit the horrible crime of gardening, they should be free to. If they want to commit the even more horrible crime of brewing that plant into a tea or smoking it, they should be free to.

I've pretty much given up on legalization. It's never going to happen. Either it remains completely illegal, or it's illegal for all but a few uses. In either case, our best bet is to entirely ignore the law, use grey and black markets, and grow our own. Create voluntary communities regardless of what the men with guns command.

Thank goodness potheads are willing to bailout their States with their Tax monies, unlike most of the right.

I'm not. Taxation on cannabis is theft.

I don't mind paying taxes whenever it is easy and convenient under our form of Capitalism. Ensuring lawful Commerce may be considered a States' right.
