    http://au.news.yahoo.com/latest/a/-/latest/15372002/abbott-criticised-for-urban-aboriginal-comment/

The nephew of West Australian Liberal MP Ken Wyatt says it is offensive for Opposition Leader Tony Abbott to use the phrase "urban Aboriginal" to describe his uncle.

The Australian newspaper reports Mr Abbott allegedly described Ken Wyatt at a dinner on Saturday night as "not a man of culture".

Mr Abbott today did not deny he had made the remark, and described Mr Wyatt - the first Indigenous MP in the House of Representatives - as an "urban Aboriginal".

He made the comment as he confirmed he wanted Country Liberal Party MLA Alison Anderson to stand for the federal seat of Lingiari.

The Country Liberals have endorsed Mataranka cattle producer Tina MacFarlane as their candidate for the electorate.

But Mr Abbott says he would like to see an Aboriginal woman like Ms Anderson in Parliament.

"I would love to think that a highly traditional Australian Aboriginal, who is nevertheless charismatic and inspirational in modern Australia as well, might enter the Federal Parliament," he said.

"I think it would be terrific if, as well as having an urban Aboriginal in our parliament, we had an Aboriginal person from central Australia, an authentic representative of the ancient cultures of central Australia in the parliament," he said.

"But as I said before, it's a matter for the Country Liberal Party."

Ben Wyatt is a Labor MP in the West Australian State Parliament and he says the remark in reference to his uncle is despicable.

"Tony Abbott needs to have a thorough understanding of Aboriginal history of Aboriginal identification and Aboriginal culture," he said.

"I think Ken Wyatt's the man to sit him down and have that discussion.

"I cannot believe that Ken Wyatt would again find himself under attack from the Liberal Party in particular, [and] the would-be prime minister Tony Abbott, who seems to have absolutely no understanding at all about Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal history.

"To suggest that Ken is not a sufficient Aboriginal for Tony Abbott because he's not a man of culture, I think not only Ken will find offensive but every Western Australian should find offensive.

"Particularly those Aboriginal people, the vast majority of Aboriginal people who do live in our nation's cities and towns."

Ken Wyatt issued a statement to say he has had extensive discussions with Mr Abbott about the comments.

He says he agreed with Mr Abbott that it would be great to have a higher representation of Indigenous Australians in the Parliament.

    ================================================================================================

History will record our time as the "age of the wrist flapping sook", or "the age of suppressed dialogue". It`s an embarrasment for a "sophisticated" society such as ours to allow ourselves to be bullied by political correctness.

Just another example of this nutters lack of depth, intelligence, understanding and respect for persons etc. What a condescending and shallow comment to make about a person in general but a person on the same side. Political correctness is what makes us a much more stable nation. If there is something that you can't say to someone in person then why say it in public, especially when you really don't have an understanding of the circumstances. He is simply a clown that does not think and does not care to think!

Maybe Abbott should just tell him to go "walk-a-about". Abbott is nut, if allows some Neanderthal to publically disrespect him like this and get away with it.

Abbott doesn't need people to disrespect him, he does it enough for us all. Honestly, I have never met someone who puts his foot in his own mouth as often as he does. As usual, we don't have to take Abbott down, he has done it for us again. He is trying to appeal to troglodytes, but there are not enough of them left now, most have died off except for a few who post here and himself.

The pathetic people are those who like the OP, cannot be happy. They argue black and blue for our indigenous people to assimilate, to move in from THEIR land to where we are comfortable with them living, living according to the rules of OUR religions, OUR way, by OUR rules in THEIR land. If they live how they have for 60000 years we call them savages, if they try to assimilate we say they are "urban" aboriginals and not "real" aboriginals. Idiots, fools, uneducated fools who say "Why don't they go back to the way they lived before if they want to". Well for the deucation of morons who think like that, maybe it is because we have STOLEN all the good productive land and raped it.

This is my land as much as anyone`s. If anyone gets their panties bunched up over a little thing like the term "urban aboriginal", they are incapable of worthwhile contribution to society. Suck it up, give me something to laugh at.

Was also amused by your post. You state that you are opposed to assimilation of Aborigines, while also opposing Aborigines living a traditional lifestyle. Can you see your blooper?

There is no easy answer for Aborigines, no "one size fits all solution". One thing is certain though, mealy mouthed, lying, politically correct slimespeak will impede progress.

Just wondering, do you believe Abbott to be a misogynist for objecting to Peter Slipper`s filthy, hatefull comments about women.
    You do, don`t you.

Just what the Australian people need. Another bludging coon in Parliament with a massive white-man “chip” on his shoulder.

I think the history books have it wrong. Neanderthals didn’t go extinct, they escaped to Australia and became Aborigines.

The profiles between Aborigines and Neanderthals are the spiting image of each other, with Broad fat noses, and high thick brows and foreheads. Maybe someone should do some serious DNA and RNA testing, if you could find a 100% pure blood Aborigine.

For God sake Tony, I know you want to have a token coon “somewhere” but is all this really worth it for a hand full of votes. The majority of the time these useless things wouldn’t even know what a pen or pencil is to be able to tic the boxes anyway. They would probably try to flog them off for a few whiffs of petrol.

    LOL LOL

Rubbish collectors won't go there, ambulances won't go there, police won't go there.

About the only thing that ends up there is hard working people's burnt out stolen cars.

Culturally sensitive to what? Sniffing petrol or any chemical that will give them a buzz. LOL LOL

Leave them all out in the bush where they belong living their own traditional lifestyle; keep providing them with welfare, alcohol and drugs, and let nature take its course.

The majority of the filthy things have got such low intelligence, that they don’t know the difference between a table and a chair.

I reckon my dogs are smarter than the average coon!!

I think somehow we have just discovered the depth and scope of this guys thinking! I reckon your missus had an affair with a black man and now you feel inadequate, is that the issue??.......lmao!! I hated it as much as you dude,, our women are falling for black man. My first love fell for a black man and hated them for a while too. I had to mature a little! One thing I do understand that since aborigines were finally considered humans not animals in 1967 there has been a huge jump in representation across all levels of society. Sports such as aussie rules, rugby league and union! Thousands of school teachers, lawyers, doctors, engineers etc etc etc. You were obviously one of the 3 per cent that voted against these people having human status and now love being blissfully ignorant of progress. There is a cycle still, and this cycle (circle)is gradually getting smaller. Can't expect these people to change over night after having their very way of life ripped from them without opportunity to participant in our society until 1967! Took their land, their culture, language, their children, their livelihoods and then expect them to get on with things only a matter of 40 years down the track after nearly 200 years of neglect.
If you can't grasp this, you have certainly got the mind and thinking of a Neanderthal...I'd say less, the mind of an animal!

Yeah, but if we are honest, we didnt take it legally therefore it is actually still there's! Yes, I own my house and yes I consider it mine but yes I do acknowledge that this land was the inheritance of Aboriginal people and is theres but for our laws! I'm not sure what we are afraid of regarding this!

Aboriginal people should have had the option like any other human to either live traditionally or westernly! It's all too late now, we have destroyed their societies very fabric, so there is only one option, the western option!

Stomping on negative talk is what has helped progress, not sure what crap you are spilling with this comment. I reckon you've watched a clip on free speech and feel that it applies to all things....yeah??. Some of you guys are so superficial.....it is definitely a extreme right wing attribute!

Not only with opportunity have they excelled in sport with 16% representation in league and afl, with only a population of 3 % they have excelled in less prominent roles such as professions requiring degrees! We don't hear about these roles, they aren't played out like the negatives in their societies still, but hey, you can't expect miracles after only 40 years of freedom!

This is NSW....I simply found the following with google searchs! This does not include private schools apparently.
    http://www.dec.nsw.gov.au/about-us/news-at-det/news/opening-pathways-for-aboriginal-leaders

"We have more than 700 permanent Aboriginal teachers in our schools, and more than 100 Aboriginal teachers in school executive positions - as principal, deputy, assistant principal, head teacher, and a highly accomplished teacher - and we want to see these numbers continue to grow," Dr Bruniges said.

There is a table on page 4 of the link below that gives a clear picture but has some interesting info!

    http://generationone.org.au/uploads/assets/c96a4ae15e9f9190810f331d18b6b85256a5ae01.pdf

Charles Perkins (University of Sydney, 1965); Margaret Valadian (University of Queensland, 1966); and John Moriarty and Ken Wanganeen (Flinders University, 1970) are considered to be the first university graduates of Indigenous descent in Australia. By 1970, a small number of Indigenous teachers had also qualified throughout Australia in teachers colleges, and Indigenous nurses were being trained in teaching hospitals. With the conversion of colleges of advanced education into universities, these occupations came into the university orbit. However, the introduction of student support programs from the mid-1970s eventually led to a massive increase in Indigenous tertiary enrolments and graduations. By the time Indigenous graduate data became available in the 1991 Census, there were more than 3,600 Indigenous graduates. By the 2006 Census, their numbers had grown to almost 20,000 (Table 1).

In terms of alcohol consumption, 80-90 % of non indigenous society consumes alcohol as opposed to I think 56% of indigenous. There is a large percentage that drink dangerous levels from this percentage though, but I don't think we can dispute we don't have a massive problem when you consider all the issues at 2am in the mornings in all cities!

Um stop insulting Neanderthals, they survived 50,000 years, the Aboriginals have been here 60,000 years, us whites, around 6,000 years and it doesn't look good for us to make the 10,000 year mark. The culdav's etc though will be extinct within 50 years or so.

I don't have a link for this but I will find them, yes thousands of Aboriginal people have attained high degrees since they were ALLOWED to. I watched a show the other night where over 50, 000 aboriginals have obtained and paid off home loans over the past 30 years.
