Though the plan was quickly rejected by Democrats, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced on the Senate floor Tuesday that there would be a vote on a bill resembling the president's plan.

"It's a strong proposal, its the only thing on the table and later this week we'll vote on it," McConnell said Tuesday afternoon. Senate leaders later Tuesday announced there would be votes Thursday both on the GOP plan and a House Democratic measure to reopen and fund the government. Both will need 60 votes to advance.

LOL at bill 'resembling' the president's plan.

If this is true, why is Mitch allowing a D bill to get near his precious floor. I say "if this is true", as Mitch is quoted as saying the GOP proposal is 'the only thing on the table'. I'm a bit confused here...

If true, this will be an interesting day to be watching C-Span.... I kid of course, because that's usually like watching paint dry.

What's the vote for the Trump/GOP plan?

What's the vote for the D/Open the govt only plan?

Which vote does Mitch schedule first?? Hmmmm...

I'll commit the unforgivable sin of bumping my own thread back to page 1 with the news that it is confirmed that McConnell WILL bring both bills up for vote tomorrow, including one the president has not said he will support, reversing his own course since the shutdown began.

I think this is pretty big news and wanted to give this topic another shot, so shoot me (err..... please don't)

It's likely both bills will fail, but will they be along straight party lines, or will there be some crossover??

Strong possibility that the Dem plan can pass given they already voted for it a month ago.

A month ago was a whole different era.... dinosaurs ruled the earth (Tyrannosaurus Mitch) and our national parks weren't overrun with feces...

Should be an interesting day... I'm still wondering what order they schedule the votes in.... wouldn't that sorta be pretty important?

Trump's under enormous pressure here so of course he'll make things worse for himself somehow. Democrats are loving this.

I'm sure that McConnell will bring up and vote out Trump's package. (assuming there is no filibuster).

I find it almost inconceivable to believe that McConnell would take even the most remote risk on this vote.

However, bringing up both measures establishes a template for the inevitable day when GOP Senators have to stand up to the temper tantrum in the White House.

Both measures seem to be expected to fail tomorrow. This was Trump's play based on the assumption that Democrats were going to be pressured into caving.

Instead, Trump's approval ratings have sunk like a stone, and the polls clearly indicate that an overwhelming majority of Americans think this wall is stupid and blame Trump for it.

Americans don't want the wall, he doesn't have the votes for it, so it doesn't happen. That's how democracy works.

His government shutdown is an attempt to circumvent democracy.

So everyone knows, the republicans in the Senate passed exactly the same bill a day before this shutdown only to have TRUMP at the last minute call for MONEY for the wall or a shutdown. Thus, the republicans that vote NO this time voted yes 7 weeks ago to the same bill. They do this out of FEAR, fear that TRUMP will tweet bad about them and they wont win their next election. McConnell, Scumbag Scalise I would always expect to look out for himself, others, not so much.
They should put the people first. You can negotiate the wall right after funding the Government.

The Democrats are cracking they know they are the ones who have been intransigent and refusing to negotiate.

"A group of centrist House Democrats, sick of political posturing, is pressing Speaker Nancy Pelosi to counter Trump’s immigration proposal with her own potential compromise. The group, led by freshman Rep. Elaine Luria of Virginia, is asking the California Democrat to offer Trump a vote on his border wall or some sort of negotiated security package in February if he first signs a bill reopening the federal government, according to a draft of the letter obtained by POLITICO."
    https://www.politico.com/story/2019/01/22/house-democrats-pelosi-shutdown-1118986

"FARGO (KFGO) - Minnesota Democratic Congressman Collin Peterson is telling his Democratic colleagues to approve President Trump's request for funding a wall on the southern border.

On KFGO's "News & Views," Peterson said approving Trump's request could help bring an end to an "unnecessary" government shutdown.

“Give Trump the money” Peterson said. “I’d give him the whole thing…and put strings on it so you make sure he puts the wall where it needs to be. Why are we fighting over this? We’re going to build that wall anyway, at some time.”

She has made zero offers. All she has done is pass a bill that has already failed.
