From what I heard from the investigation, the air traffic controller didn't notice a thing, so therefore the USAF wasn't contacted....

If they are downed over water, which is constantly moving, it will be harder to find than if it were on land. This has been discussed on the news.

As for me, I think global warming has repositioned the Bermuda Triangle.

Either that or David Copperfield is working on a new act.

Why exactly would Iran supply a nuke to terrorists? When have they ever given weapons of mass destruction to terrorists?

The "turn off switch" for the transponder is not on the control wheel like they are saying on TV. And based on what else I know to be fact (which I won't say here), I believe that if this was hijacked, whoever did it....whether it was the pilots themselves or some others on the plane.....they KNEW the code for turning off the transponder without raising any red flags. IOW's, they were either pilots themselves or had training in the 777. What a mystery! And tragedy.

I do know that there are a lot smarter people than me....or anyone on here.....who are working on figuring it out. All we're doing here is guessing.....

Some other information about the pilots from NBC News:

"KUALA LUMPUR — The pilot of a Malaysia Airlines jet that went missing on Saturday enjoyed flying the Boeing 777 so much that he spent his off days tinkering with a flight simulator of the plane that he had set up at home, current and former co-workers said.

Zaharie Ahmad Shah, 53, captain of the airliner carrying 239 people bound for Beijing from the Malaysian capital, had always wanted to become a pilot and joined the national carrier in 1981.

Airline staff who worked with the pilot said Zaharie knew the ins and outs of the Boeing 777 extremely well, as he was always practicing with the simulator. They declined to be identified due to company policy.

"He was an aviation tech geek. You could ask him anything and he would help you. That is the kind of guy he is," said a Malaysia Airlines co-pilot who had flown with Zaharie in the past.

Zaharie set up the Boeing 777 simulator at his home in a suburb on the outskirts of the Malaysian capital where many airline staff stay as it provides quick access to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Pictures posted by Zaharie on his Facebook page show a simulator with three computer monitors, a tangle of wires and several panels."

"His 27-year-old co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid had clocked 2,763 hours - having joined Malaysia Airlines in 2007."

Another pilot said: "The Boeing 777 doesn't just stall like that," said a former Malaysia Airlines pilot who works for a rival airline. "It is one of the safest planes out there. It doesn't just fall out of the sky like that."

That part of the world is a hotbed for pirates. Most ships passing through now have weapons for the crew.

What would the difference be to having pirates hijack an airplane? Land it somewhere in dense jungle, crash land and then cover it up, and, when things cool off a bit, send out ransom letters. The cell phones still ring because they're still in the plane.

I heard that there is another 'transponder' that transmits the 'health' of the airplane that cannot be shut down unless there is a catastrophic electrical failure. That transmission also stopped. Anyone have more info on this?

I heard this morning the cabin could have lost pressure at 35000 ft which would have resulted in the death of everybody onboard, including the pilots. The plane could have then drifted off course and flown itself until it crashed into the sea.

Sounds more plausible than most scenarios... except for the beacon being turned off... or what could have caused the decompress?

It is possible it was terrorism or more likely attempted terrorism, but who knows. But just becasue two passengers used stolen id's may indicate other possibiltiies that was not terrorism such as a clandestine operation or the two may have been fleeing Iran and did want the Iranian authorities to know about it.

Had the plane that crashed in the field gone much further they were about to shoot it down. Today is a different world and the rules and readiness have changed.

Exactly, and they are being so covert about releasing information they know, days later. Why did the plane turn abruptly left and fly over the Indian Ocean, shut off all communications, and have people with stolen passports on them? They knew right away that the jet turned abruptly left and headed out over the Indian ocean and they did not dislcose this information and let the search commence in the south China Sea knowing full well that the plane would not be there.

The code IS set by ATC, insofar as it's assigned by them. But it's random and different for each flight.

I experimented with my cell phone.

I called it from my landline. The call immediately started ringing at both ends.

I turned the cellphone off and called it. The call immediately went to voicemail.

After turning it back on and calling it again to verify all was good, I quickly sealed the cellphone inside a metal cookie tin, and then called it. I heard the ringing tone on the landline, which kept on going, but the cell phone was not ringing.

What's happening? When you power up your cell phone, it contacts the nearest tower and says "Hey, here I am, put my location into your database and route all calls to me through that tower." When you power it down, it tells the network "Signing off now, so send calls to voicemail". But when the signal suddenly just dies, the network doesn't know where the phone is or what the status of it is. Call it, and the network starts searching for it in vain. While doing that, it sends a ringtone to the caller, so that the caller knows the call hasn't been dropped.

Hence, it's all consistent with those passengers' phones being destroyed or underwater.

It's not a good tell for the situation those phones are in.

If my phone is off, the caller hears ringing for a bit before going to voicemail.
But I have had phones where it went straight to VM.

There is no way that all the cell phones on that plane are doing the same thing.

Indeed it would. Which is why I asked myself if I had a 777 and wanted to fly it to the US and not get shut down, how would I go about doing so. I am a pilot, though it's been some years since I've flown, so I understand the system. I'm not going to post details here, on the off chance a bad guy is reading this, but I'll say it really wouldn't be that hard. Unfortunately.

Look, I realize it's probably over the top, and if they DID steal that plane, it means, at the very least, they have a qualified, whether or not certified pilot who knows what I know and then some. But god forbid it actually happens, I would be crushed to know that it was even hypothetically possible I helped them even a little.

Methinks you are regurgitating Airport 75 too much.

I don't think it was stolen. It is possible it may have been an attempted hijacking or a terrorsit incident similar to the Lockebie incidnet, or mechanical failure. But being stolen, I don't think so. Not many palces to land that pane in the area that it was in. Vietnam does not want it nor China. So, again who? Singapore? Too many people. Micronesia? No airport. Indonesia? Too far. North Korea? Only if you believe in the movies .

I don't even know what that is.

I said it was just a guess. Looks like it went down though......as China has released some satellite images that shows large pieces of debris....some 80ft in length in an area close to the flight path. Now it will be about deciding why it went down.
