The beginning of the end of free speech

There is one rule for muslims and one rule for non muslims.
That is, muslims can say what they please about any other religion, including hate speech about jews
and any other faith, but when it comes to non muslims criticising islam in any way, its banned.
Rulings such as this gradually weaken human rights, and its only a matter of time before one of the female muslims elected to congress begins to demand islamic rights.

 

The TITLE of the thread says noting about Muslim sensitivity. I don't pretend to understand the Muslim mindset ...but it seems that being sensitive to the naming of a silly bear is just over reacting. My view is that if anyone comes to live in the US........they are obliged to live by US rules, laws and assimilate into the american culture. They can do that without losing their own identity. IF Americans c choose to live in another country...... then they must adapt[t to that country. Not saying this is right or wrong.........but it is a view point. What I mean by responsible speech...is that one does not engage in hurtful speech...... as that is cou;counterproductive. Maybe they should just name a bear Jesus and every other religious leader. Not sure how naming a bear has anything to do with free speech.......as opposed to some religious thing........or cultural thing.(although they do affect one another )

to answer another posters question: No I would not take kindly to being dictated as to what I could say or not say. But if I am rude / nasty then I can't complain about being criticised.

Horsesh't. You completely (and deliberately) ignore the intent of the ruling and that was to allow a member state to have its own laws.

 

No religion should be protected from critique, using the right of free speech. None. They exist in the world and like all other ideologies are fair game to be talked about, critiqued and argued about.

 

So not actually a thread about free speech, but just an excuse for more Muslim-bashing hate speech.

Exactly!!! Perhaps in the future..... religion won't have such a hold on some folks........ wile reason, logic facts would be paramount.

Let's not forget...... beliefs (particularly fixated / rigid ones)).... are technically just delusions. as most are not evidence based.

Even liberals are getting sick of this stuff, and I predict a Thermidorean reaction.

David Duke used to preach at campuses in the 70's on a little soapbox or bench. People ignored him and nobody cared. Now the mere MENTION of him coming to a campus would trigger riots and nervous breakdowns.

What has happened to this country? There are actually prominent people in this country, like Howard Dean, a physician and former governor, who think that hate speech is not protected and presume to know what it is.

Perhaps, but I doubt the various religions will ever die out completely, unless the Far Left can destroy them by law and force. I don;t think there is any danger from the Far Right, although they may not like any religion but their own.

Religions seem to contain some delusion, but they have been very important in our rise and even survival as a species. I don't think some atheists really understand the importance of this thing called religion, and all that it entails.

Anyways, nothing is sacred when it comes to the basic human right of free speech and freedom of thought. The religions if they are mature and responsible, can take all critiques. And if they can't? Tough shi*t because the right to speak freely is of a greater value. My opinion.

Agree. In fact don't much matter what folks"believe"
........as long as they don't impose their beliefs on others. (MY Humble opine) This is where RESPONSIBLE speech comes in. Just like all freedoms......... one has the right to them as long as one does comply with the societal rules/ standards of the culture they live in.
