So, where are the reports of this "realistic scenario" having occurred, there being millions more firearms and concealed carry owners in the US in the last 20 years, it should be happening all the time, right? People in drunken stupor whipping out their shooties and blazing away in the dark I mean. Surely news reports will be plentiful and common, right?

Permissive laws that result in firearms being ubiquitous increases the likelihood of suicide, as well as accidental deaths by firearms in the home.

Empirical research on the causal effects of firearm availability on the risk of suicide is consistent with the claim that firearms increase suicide risk.

Suicide attempts involving a firearm are more likely to result in death than attempts using any other means (Azrael and Miller, 2016). If firearms are available to a person who is thinking about taking his or her life, the presence of firearms might be linked with a higher likelihood of suicide and higher regional suicide rates. However, if firearms are not available, a person might either not attempt to take his or her life or might do so using other means. In this essay, we examine the empirical evidence on the relationship between firearm availability (or prevalence) and suicide.

Provide your empirical data, and I shall be happy to review it. Are you citing race as the primary factor in the commission of all crimes?

So why are suicides higher in Japan which has no common gun ownership than in the US which has lots of people who own guns? One would think the report you mention would indicate a higher overall rate among gun owning countries than in those that have restrictions.

CNN = MSM = Fake News

"After Davis publicly backtracked from the claims, the New York Post and the Washington Post outed him as their confirming source and published apologies from Davis, a lawyer and communications expert who became well known for his work for Bill Clinton. The original CNN story — broadcast during Chris Cuomo’s prime-time show and written by Jim Sciutto, Marshall Cohen, and Watergate reporting legend Carl Bernstein — said that Davis had “declined to comment.” His involvement in the story, on so-called “background,” has not been previously reported."
BUZZFEED, Lanny Davis Says He Was A Source For CNN’s Trump Tower Story,
Davis, Michael Cohen’s lawyer and spokesperson, said he also regrets lying about his involvement in the story on CNN last week., By Steven Perlberg,

Either that or concealed carry permit holders aren't the problem you imagine.

I live in a State that passed Constitutional carry, which for those that don't know what this is, means anyone without a criminal record can carry open or concealed without a permit. The liberals claimed this would result in a blood bath, which didn't happen. I can explain this in one word - demographics.

Are the poor, especially the poor in highly-populated urban neighborhoods, more disposed to engage in criminal activity and more apt to victimize others in the same circumstances? Of course. (As your 2014 British reference indicates, "93 per cent of black victims were killed by blacks and 84 per cent of white victims were killed by whites.")

Despite the contention of racists who like to cast their race as somehow morally superior and other races inherently inferior, there is no scientific validation for such a self-serving notion.

A fantasist could imagine a lone, malevolent gunster whipping out his shooty in a dark, noisy nightclub and, before he has the opportunity to inflict considerable harm, a myriad of gun toters present, all eminently vigilant, sober, cool-headed, and accurate, dispatch the dastard with alacrity, dispatch, and surgical precision as the band plays on.

Dream on. Permissiveness must confront reality.

Stupid logic. Guns don't cause suicides.

More importantly, why is it a crisis for an Australian who rarely talks about the problems in her own country?

It means the people have a right to kerp and bear arms

The Founders were very clear about that

If they had intended to lock all the guns in police armories they would have done so at the time

But instead everyone was allowed to arm themselves

The ready availability of firearms facilitates suicide by firearms in the US.

It does not impact other cultural factors that cause national suicide rates to vary.
Would Japan's suicide rate be even higher if gun permissiveness was practiced there as well?

We can only speculate, but the far lower firearm homicide rate with far fewer firearms available may be an indicator.

Edit: How the hell can anyone from either England or Australia have any clue about the culture in the USA? Impossible.

    Opportunity. Motivation. Means:

The risk of suicide is highest immediately after the purchase of a handgun, suggesting that some firearms are specifically purchased for the purpose of committing suicide....

Suicide attempts involving a firearm are more likely to result in death than attempts using any other means. If firearms are available to a person who is thinking about taking his or her life, the presence of firearms might be linked with a higher likelihood of suicide and higher regional suicide rates. However, if firearms are not available, a person might either not attempt to take his or her life or might do so using other means. I

The ready availability of firearms increases the likelihood of successful suicides.

If you have credible data to the contrary, please cite it.

I don't live in Japan. They aren't my problem. They're smart enough to deal with their own issues. They certainly know them better than the USA does.

Why, because he won't call the Senate back for an emergency session? Also, why "MOSCOW Mitch?"
