The tougher stance on China was probably the most liked foreign policy that Trump resonated with the US. Biden has already stated he won't auto remove those policies.

It is one thing to have tariffs, it is another to give those affected by the tariffs free money.

It is so sad that we are happy and relieved just to get a President who does the bare minimum of his job. Good bye Trump... you will be forever held up as the example of how a President should not act.

You are confusing the protests in HK with non-existent protests on the mainland? The mainlanders are very satisfied with their governement's success in eradicating poverty.

Chinese rate government ‘more capable than ever before’, long-term Harvard study finds | South China Morning Post (scmp.com)

The report concluded that there was no real sign of “burgeoning discontent among China’s main demographic groups, casting doubt on the idea that the country was facing a crisis of political legitimacy” as the poorer, inland residents expressed equal – if not even greater – confidence in the government than their more wealthy and privileged compatriots.

Compared with our hyper-partisan, blind-leading-the-blind, adversarial, 2-party rabble euphemistically called 'democracy'...

For my part, my vote goes to the system that can eradicate poverty and engender sustainable prosperity for all.

Until you get rid of those inner city ghettos and systemic poverty, your notion of a system that "stands the test of time" is misconstrued.

Quoting SCMP on anything is about as worthless as quoting CNN, and renders the rest of your post as absolute drivel.

No it doesn't, but your remark does show your incapacity to debate the issue. Harvard is a respected institution. I can easily find other news outlets that report the same article quoted in SCMP.

And good for SCMP. Fact is your Western 'sovereignty of the individual' fantasy will destroy your own hyper-partisan rabble* called 'democracy', regardless of China.

    * I'm just now watching Trump (on TV) working the crowd, claiming he won Georgia. Rabble is too generous a word to describe that spectacle...

Did that Harvard study only question the people that were afraid of the Chinese Communist Party detaining or vanishing their family members if they spoke ill of their own government?

Because it certainly appears so. By the way, our “democracy”, flawed as it is, doesn’t do that to its own people on the regular like the Chinese Communist Party does.

    No

    "flawed" ?

I'm just now watching Trump (on TV) working the crowd, claiming he won Georgia. "Rabble" and "flawed" are too generous words to describe that spectacle...

That still is nothing compared to the walking human rights violation that is the Chinese Communist Party. Look at you, kowtowing and prostrating to them like they have your home address or something.

What human right violations? China has finally eradicated poverty this year, while you tolerate high incarceration and poverty rates amidst wealth. And as for Xinjiang, it was a backward Islamic culture habouring separatist terrorist cells (like many others around the globe).

This comment just shows how ideologically blind some people are.

On China, the Dems and the Repubs are in lock-step, as are the the Left and Right in Australia. And no doubt Europe also, although some remnants of communist parties might still exist in Europe (not sure). And Russia? Is Putin on board with the hysterical Bannon/Trump/Pompeo crusade against China, which has all the hallmarks of the anti-communist McCarthy era?

It's a line easily sold to anti-Marxist 'sovereignty of the individual' people in the 'democratic' West.

My concern with all this is the Chinese economic system ("socialism with Chinese characteristics") is a better model for eliminating poverty, than our Western neolibearal economic model, in which money creation is confined to the private sector, no doubt a result of pre-Marxist economic theory in the West which is still the dominant economic paradigm in the West.

So it's not surprising to see the anti-Chinese rhetoric ratcheting up on a daily basis as the Trump presidency draws to a close.

It's the natural play book of the Right, on which (in the case of China) the Left are only too happy to join, on the basis of "national security" which is code for maintaining global US hegemony in the face of China's economic success.

Of course the correct solution to paranoia about "national security" is to strengthen the machinery of the UN...but again, the "sovereignty of the individual" meme which all good believers in 'democracy' follow, don't want to know about the capacity for reform in the UN.

Very sad. Henry Kissinger recently warned war with China is not an option. My hope is China's poverty-busting
economy keeps growing as it has in the last 2 decades, despite Trump's attempt to destroy it on behalf of maintaining US global hegemony...on behalf of an evil military industrial complex responsible for "humanity hanging on a cross of iron" (Eisenhower).

Well if the government is demonstrably eradicating poverty (which it is), the people don't WANT to protest.

Meanwhile let's see how BLM protests resulting from "you are living in poverty, your neighborhoods are like war zones, your schools and hospitals are broken...." plays out in the US, as people increasingly reject entrenched poverty and increasing inequality.

The poorest of neighborhoods in the USA have far better social services than other nations, hands down. !!!!!

"You are living in poverty, your neighborhoods are like war zones, your schools and hospitals are broken..." spoken by you know who....

So the US has the highest incarceration rates in the world.

But typical conservatives aren't capable of seeing beyond their own interests.

You seem to keep changing the argument, and don't forget we don't incarcerate for political opinion, something you must be proud of :)

Poverty is THE topic. Get rid of it and there will be no need for adversarial politics, nor incarceration, of the type we are witnessing in the US.

You don’t remember a scandal of 40 years ago... Australia did sell canned kangaroo meat to America, as beef.

Seems so, because every time Uncle Sam gets all gung ho with testosterone and guns, the first door he knocks on is ours.
