To be honest I'm unimpressed by the SNP and I'm starting to think that Sturgeon is a lunatic.
I also think that Holyrood should not have been established but still this is one of the results of being the most democratic country in the western hemisphere.

Well I was one of the 26% that voted "NO" for a Scottish devolution in the 1997 referendum. I think that there are now millions of voters, certainly Labour voters that now wished they had joined me in my protest against more "jobs for the boys".

I'm sure people thought it was a good idea at the time and you're right in that devolution really just creates more government jobs which aren't necessary.
Nowadays we seem to be living in a time when people feel that more devolution or more independence is a good idea. However independence without advantages or any real point isn't independence at all.

If Scotland is on the path to independence, then Holyrood is a good idea.
If not, then it's just a bunch of Westminster rejects. Same as the EU.

If Scotland is on the path to independence, then one hopes for the Scottish sake that they don't end up being governed by the current crop at Holyrood.
That way really does lie Greece.

It was only yesterday that some SNP clown was trying to persuade me that by adopting Yanis Verofaukis' economic policies, Scotland was going to be an economic success story.
Much like Greece's became when they did it I expect.

Too many ballsless losers in power in Scotland. They will sacrifice all to their pathetic vanity.

And what staggers me is that the SNP ( the pro- ndependence party ) actually wants the EU !!! It beggers belief !! The TTIP & all those pro-corporate agenda that the EU promotes. The greates con job in Scotland is that the SNP seems to have convinced many people that being a member of the EU is a good idea. When clearly it is a bad idea for Scotland. The only reason why the SNP promote this idea is that it is now another plank against England!

The SNP would beggar Scotland just to get away from WestMinster & they simply don't care.

Actually this doesn't surprise me at all.
I have way too many Scottish friends not to realise that they would ally with foreign powers against us. Accept French nationality over ours used to be a common one prior to the EU.

It's essentially along the lines of the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
The stupid part was where they were viewing me as an enemy of course. But hey, what can you do, that is Scottish culture.

Well not necessarily, I have converted three friends that were pro-SNP pro-Independence into anti SNP, anti-EU voters in the last two years.

They may well pass on my words & ideas to others. So slowly slowly, stone by stone the SNP mountain is crumbling down...

Expose the SNP ignorance to the scrutiny of facts of what an Independent Scotland within an EU means & most Scots will be horrified by the idea!

I suggest you do some research before making anal comments such as the one above .. oh and instead of trying to hide your responses why don't you actually quote the person you are responding to .. fact of the matter is that Scotland does not have the financial resources to go independent.

    Of course it does.

They won't be deeply poorer, just lose a few public services is all.

Again do your research Scotland would be in a worse position than Greece. Scotland would need to cut spending by 18% or raise taxes by 21% or a combination of both just to cover the 7.9 billion lost due to oil prices collapsing, add in the cost of their share of the national debt and an economy growing at one of the slowest rates in Europe and Scotland would be deep in the crap. Borrowing would almost certainly be out of the question as Scotland has no reputation to rely on, in fact there only reputation is one of bankruptcy - which is what led to the Act of Union in 1707 in th first place. Scotland has the largest deficit of any of the countries that make up the UK.

There's more to life than public spending.
    Just saying.

So they raise taxes and drop services. Big deal. They can if they want to. I'm not saying it will be a great big life of flowers and angels singing, but they can if they want to. They'll still have an enviable standard of living afterwards. It's significant but not a fundamental game changer.

    True but its very significant.
I'm sure there's no malice behind that phrase but I personally find it awful.
So what makes you think that it would be insignificant?
That's very unlikely because government spending covers a lot more than one might think.

In the event of independence Scotland would have to privatise healthcare, scrap free tuition, scrap any kind of industrial subsidy and raise taxes.
Also housing, pensions, education, defence, law and order would all be affected negatively.
I think that is quite significant for the society. It would likely cause large scale emigration or alternatively the seeking jobs elsewhere.

I never said there wasn't more to life than public spending ... cutting PS by 18% and raising taxes will wipe out any ideology of "enviable standard of living"

I should ignore Baff if I were you! He is just a Public school educated toff (from a bin man origin) that has no political affiliation .. He really has no idea if he is fish or fowl... He is just a straw man that can't make up his own mind & likes to be a provocative @rse hole.... I have seen him on other forums just ignore him, not worth the effort!

But going back to the original post, before "Baff" attempts to hijack the thread for his own vanity...

Our Export figures as per Scottish Government website show £45billion to rest of UK, £17billion to Rest of World and £11billion to the EU. Why break away from your best market to get governed by your smallest market.

Good luck with that. No other country is hiring spare public sector workers.
What typically happens is that they move into other fields of employment. Which makes for a more productive economy.

I don't foresee a privatisation of healthcare, I think tuition fee's is a doable. Prescription charges, less buses and whatever.

If govt sector is 50% of the economy, an 18% reduction = 9% reduction in the total economy minus anyone who gets work in the private sector.
It may be significant but it's not a deal breaker. It doesn't make independence financially unviable. It just means Scotland must have austerity.
Just as it must if it stays in the union, as it happens. Can the average Scot live well on 95% of what he has now?
    Sure he can.

I hope there isn't still a deal out there where it continues to whine and get more.
