If you are using yourself as the standard [as most people seem to], then you will ALWAYS find that people are [fill in the blank], and occasionally you'll find the one who has it just right [agrees with you].

Humanity? Look at what human beings have done over the millennia.

Compassion? Compassion is simply having the wisdom [seeing the truth of the matter] to do the appropriate thing.

There is a moral imperative. Where does it come from?

That depends upon how cheap the slaves are. The current story is that slaves in the ante bellum South cost the modern equivalent of a mid range sports car and so were treated fairly well but it is also a known fact that plantation owners of the indigo settlements in Martinique would vie with other in how closely could match a slave's price with his output vs his food cost as he was worked to death

My contention is that we are not serfs but not free men either, though if we're not there have never actually been any.

If you are working in a field which has been seriously financialized [such as health care], then you are quite serf-like. Much of your labor goes to pay for all the parasites that transformed the best health care system in the world into a fascist nightmare.

Having mountains of corpses being eaten by buzzards outside the locked hospital doors offends most modern sensibilities though obviously not all of them.

I suppose that's what happens if you cannot afford your deductible and co-pays [although the recycling aspect of such will definitely be appealing to a certain segment of the population].

There is a spectrum that ranges from Free to Enslavement and we are all somewhere on that spectrum, probably in different places throughout our lives. As infants we are enslaved by our physical form but slowly grow out of the limitations of childhood and adolescence until finally we are making adult decisions. There are factors we choose like our choice of lifestyle, career, family relationships, fitness level. There are also many other factors we don’t choose like our culture, our political system, our physical capabilities. There is no one thing that solely makes us free or not free.

Free will is not a static thing, we gain and lose fee will through our lives. We can develop our freedom through effective decision making and degrade our freedom through poor decision making

No, I am not using myself as the standard, I am using the definition of cynicism which is an attitude characterized by a general distrust of the motives of "others". An attitude well documented by you.
Skepticism is healthy and cynicism is not.

Where did the “moral imperative” come from? We are a social species. In order to get along, thrive and evolve as a species there must be standards or parameters that enable that. A very important one is the concept of fairness.

I don't know if anyone has tried to define slavery on here but I think of it as the the taking of free will. We choose to give up free will in our social and economic dealings. I gave up a lot of free will marrying and having children. It was my choice, that is not slavery. I also limited my freedom with house and car payments and that is not slavery. If I choose to live in society I have responsibilities to society, like paying taxes and following its laws, that is not slavery.

Like dawn, when we first begin to see. Over the days course, everything unseen and vague is alighted and made fully observable by the ascension and descension of the sun.

Slavery is wrong because in God we are all equal. Our American DOI and Constitution honors and establishes this spiritual and self evident truth as a standard, called freedom. And though it took awhile for everyone to catch up with the full institution of freedom and the abolition of slavery and other injustices, it is nevertheless true, that in God we are all equal and free.

So if the only choices available to you are slavery version 1 and slavery version 2 then its your choice therefore not slavery.
So you happily pay someone to take your money as spend it as you would?
So then congress and the legislature and scrotumus maximus didnt do that for us?
What possible 'legitimate' reason could the guv come up with to become a religion ban polygamy?
Where did we give them the authority of dictating the directions of our moral compass?
So we choose to fight all these wars? You voted on that right?

So then if you want to live in this society you do not have the right to have an abortion, (as a result of the present day whim) and if you are caught getting one outside this society you will put in prison and bankrupted? Thats freedom? How? You agreed to that,... right?

Your take away point seems to be if you want to exist in a society you need to be a slave to that societies religion.

Any man that even considers having two wives... has never suffered through having just one.

I guess that I'm still kind of shocked that so many folks believe in the idea that slavery is some kind of noble endeavor.. As if those who would enslave the rest of humanity just have their best interests at heart... It's pretty disturbing. This is what makes places like (insert any authoritarian dictatorship) work around the world. And then, of course, in places where free folk actually live, you get these thread trying to undermine the idea that freedom is worse than servitude. Isn't that what Janet Yellen told the congress? Minorities have to have abortions so they can work? It sure looks like this is what modern "liberals" believe in. Can we just admit already that modern liberals aren't liberal at all. that they work, tirelessly to erode actual freedoms to ensure servitude in the US? I think we're at that point already.

Nah, those things definitely aren’t slavery but you definitely give up some freedom when you choose to do any if the things you mention. Certainly it’s worthwhile most of the time.

For whom? you? your moral compass?
What gives you the right to enforce your moral compass above another?
The mob? My mob is bigger than your mob therefore my morals are the rule?

I get it...you're the skeptic and I am the cynic. How convenient.

    Close, but no cigar.

DING!! DING!! DING!! DING!! DING!! DING!! DING!! DING!! DING!! DING!! DING!! DING!! DING!! DING!! DING!!

We have a winner!! The moral imperative against slavery and for freedom comes from God, not man. This is one of the many reasons why religion has been so incredibly important throughout history.

Leave it up to man [e.g., in the Godless states of the USSR and Communist China, you see what happens when the Utopians take over and impose their innate morality].

Whether God exists or not, man had to create Him so he would not destroy himself.

Um no. God or belief in god is not required to be against slavery or other kinds of immorality. Nationalism is faith-based nonsense just like religion.

So name the God who declared that there was a moral, categorical imperative against slavery. Can't be the one of the Bible.

The point is that man's intelligence ALWAYS overrides his innate morality [to the negative]. How easy it is to justify every damn thing [if it just happens to benefit yourself].

But don't take my word for it. Open any history book.

There are plenty of times when intellect helps correct innate misconceptions.

I am sure that every tyrant felt that his/her course of action made perfect sense to them.
