You got it! This whole past decade or so of RIGHT WING homophobia caught me totally by surprise. I admit it. I worked with many gay men over the course of 13 years at a company I worked for during the 70's and 80' and didn't think a damn thing about it! Worked, traveled and partied with several gay men (and maybe one woman). The group as a whole were smart, capable, and fun to hang around. (We were all young and most of us single and we partied in cities all over this country). Though we knew, NONE were 'out' at the time. (We did lose several to AIDS--then everyone knew). Nobody asked and nobody told. I JUST FOUND OUT 2 weeks ago that one of these guys has been with his same partner for over 20 years. They are 'out'. His partner is a US NAVY CAPTAIN. Now that part 'shocked' me! I didn't know that that high up one would come out--even now. My how times have changed!

Lol...Sure, blame the victim. It's as good a rationale as any for homophobia.

Maybe you'll attend the ceremony and give them your editorial opinion on the matter?

"Homophobia" doesn't exist, it is a political propaganda term that only morons use. There is no victim here , except maybe the general public who is being forced to condone and celebrate something they don't agree with. Maybe they should let go of their Heterophobia and we can all get along.

That's the way it used to be.... in the days when bravery, altruism, benevolence, heroism and true life saving achievements were recognized, appreciated and rewarded.... but now.... hell, forget all the above and pin a medal on someone like Milk just b/c he was a gay politician who liked having sex w/teen boys.

Pretty damn pathetic what our society has turned into and now someone like him is having his mug slapped on a commemorative stamp and being honored at the WH..........

    There is no shame anymore.......

Well then, that only leaves us with one description that fits.

Dan White was a lifelong DEMOCRAT RACIST. From San Francisco...In fact a San Francisco politician.

Why do you never read your actual links when you start another anti-homosexual thread?

The White House announced today that it will have a dedication ceremony next month to celebrate the debut of the US postage stamp featuring slain civil rights leader Harvey Milk.

The stamp will become available to the public on 22 May which is Harvey Milk Day in California.

In announcing the ceremony, The White House described Milk as 'a visionary leader ... whose achievements gave hope and confidence to the (LGBTI) community in the United States and elsewhere at a time when the community was encountering widespread hostility and discrimination.'

The White House also stated: 'Milk believed that government should represent all citizens, ensuring equality and providing needed services.'

It will be what is known as a 'Forever Stamp' which means that even if postage fees go up, the stamp will still be valid and no additional postage will be needed.

Milk was a Navy veteran, businessman and community activist when he was elected to the San Francisco board of supervisors in 1977 - the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California.

He was shot and killed, along with San Francisco mayor George Moscone, on Nov. 27, 1978 by their former colleague on the board, Dan White.

Milk was only in office for 11 months but was responsible for passing a stringent gay rights ordinance for the city.

His story was told in the 2008 film Milk which won Academy Awards for Sean Penn (best actor) and screenwriter Dustin Lance Black. In 2009, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.

    Its all right there.

Of course the White House is doing no such thing.

    - - - Updated - - -

If it wasn't for Sec providing the latest 'gay' news, none of us would be thinking about Harvey Milk.

    - - - Updated - - -

You should tell Sec about that- he doesn't seem to understand why.

    - - - Updated - - -

Love the double standard. With Jefferson you ignore that he is accused of having illegal sex- with Milk that is all you care about.

The double standard is thick with this thread

Sec, it's a parade - a damn PARADE! And the type of parade that I wouldn't even take myself to, let alone my kids..... I sure wouldn't call the SF type of parade an 'accomplishment'.... I call them revolting.

The claim that Thomas Jefferson fathered children with Sally Hemings, a slave at Monticello, entered the public arena during Jefferson's first term as president, and it has remained a subject of discussion and disagreement for two centuries. Based on documentary, scientific, statistical, and oral history evidence, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation (TJF) Research Committee Report on Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings (January 2000) remains the most comprehensive analysis of this historical topic. Ten years later, TJF and most historians believe that, years after his wife’s death, Thomas Jefferson was the father of the six children of Sally Hemings mentioned in Jefferson's records, including Beverly, Harriet, Madison, and Eston Hemings.

That is the summary in the first paragraph-
TJF and most historians believe that, years after his wife’s death, Thomas Jefferson was the father of the six children of Sally Hemings mentioned in Jefferson's records, including Beverly, Harriet, Madison, and Eston Hemings.

Of course this is not proof that Jefferson had illegal sex with a slave, but it is more evidence than there is that Milk ever had illegal sex
    .
Please stop abusing the word 'facts'. Jack McKinley never accused Milk of having sex with him as a minor. Milk was never accused, charged, arrested or convicted of having sex with McKinley. There was no investigation going on and the only thing that the assassin's bullet ended was Milk (and Mayor Moscone's) life.

If Milk was alive today he would not be being honored with a stamp- and there would be absolutely no criminal charges against him regarding McKinley because there is no evidence that they ever had sex together.

Yep, a MURDERED gay man who held public office 40 years ago who had a WILLING teenage lover. (And probably in 1978, was not even considered statutory rape in any state, I'm guessing--but wanna make a bet??)

Dan White was also a conservative Catholic Irish American.

    Your point?

There is no evidence that Milk did have a teenage lover. However, in NY, 16 is underage- if any man had sex with McKinley when he was 16, it would have been considered statutory rape or some variation on it.

How amazingly close minded. Have you ever been to a Gay Freedom Parade in San Francisco? I have many times- probably the best parade in San Francisco, challenged only by Carnival(the heterosexual equivelant).

You call it revolting and you have never even been to one. I call that pretty revolting.

I see what you did there. Just look at that picture; one grown man bending over in front of another grown man. If Harvey Milk, the hero, hadn't been murdered by some "right-wing homophobe", then I'm sure that if he were alive today he would be oh-my-goodnessing and drooling all over himself at the sight of that. :D

Will the UK give this guy a stamp?

Monstrous cover-up: How the Liberal party, police and MI5 concealed MP Cyril Smith's industrial-scale child abuse

For four decades, 29st politician was free to prey on vulnerable children as young as eight
Police received at least 144 complaints from victims yet authorities blocked any prosecution
New book serialised in Daily Mail details how Smith - who died in 2010 aged 82 - was repeatedly protected despite being arrested for sex crimes
MI5 and Special Branch officers put pressure on police to drop investigations
Child porn was found in Smith’s car but police were ordered to release him
Liberal Party put his name forward for knighthood in 1988 in spite of rumours of his sordid activities swirling around Westminster

Gene Autry was an accomplished entertainer. Milk was an ineffective city politician for 11 months.

    I realize that

but if he did organize a parade then it's a bigger accomplishment than why he's being celebrated. He was a homosexual, had sex with a 16 year old lad and was "brave" enough to speak openly about having gay sex. Gee, If I speak about what I do with whipped cream and chocolate sauce can i get a stamp too?

Probably not, because homosexuals have already been commemorated. You and your boyfriend would have had to publicize this years ago to have any chance at a stamp. But don't let that stop you from enjoying your sex life.
