I am with the Reagan, Kennedy, Clinton crowd, as the best Presidents. A good definition of the modern liberal is one who defies reason. Because that would be the only explanation for the 17 voters who chose Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter as the best Presidents of the last fifty years.

I might, if anybody can prove G.W. ever did anything on purpose based on his own original thinking. Maybe you mean Uncle Dick, but then technically he wasn't President.

Are you both daft? I think he was being sarcastic. Bush isnt from Illinois and didnt run up 18 trillion in debt. The debt isnt falling its soaring the deficit is declining at a record rate only because Obama raised it so high at the start. Its now back to about where he started

IT really kills you libs dont it. Its one of the main reasons we love him so much :)

When tax rates were that high no one paid them. Reagan vastly increased revenue to the government . The dem congress simply spent it faster than he could take it in. Lower rates mean more money not less in many cases. You lower the rates and expand the base

A philanderer and son of a bootlegger who got elected by dad paying off the mafia. I say he was a better president than man. I doubt many of us even remember him well. I can still remember being in school when he was shot and they sent us all home in Jr high. I know it did seem like camelot to me back then

Reagan won the Cold War without firing a shot. He did increase military spending and thus added $1.86 trillion to the national debt, but he obtained a priceless result for it. Just ask the people in Poland, Lithuania, Germany, etc.

Presidents going back to Ike had fantasized about 'liberation,' but Reagan actually achieved it. Reagan can be compared to FDR in this regard. FDR ran up a big debt, but it went to win WWII, leaving the world immeasurably better off.

Yes he failed to stand up to Stalin. I can imagine if Reagan had been President at the time most of Germany and eastern Europe would have been under US-British-French control and the USSR would not have become a super power.

    - - - Updated - - -

Even with his increases in defense spending Reagan requested less spending that the Congress authorized every year and had they accepted his spending request and the recessions he submitted by the end of his term we would have been well on the way to a surplus.

Fair enough, and it is also little noted that non-defense, domestic spending under Reagan actually slightly declined. It was the smallest of declines (-1.4%), but no other president going back to LBJ has a negative sign attached to that number.

Domestic Human resource spending went from $313B in 1980 to $619B in 1990
Defense went from $113B in 1980 to $299B in 1990

    https://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/omb/budget/fy2016/assets/hist03z1.xls

But again, the Congress controls spending especially when their is an opposition President. The automatic assigning of budget surpluses/deficits to which ever persons is sitting a President at the time if folly.

Here is my source for my number that non-defense spending dropped 1.4% under Reagan
    https://books.google.com/books?id=o..., homeland security, and entitlements&f=false

Note that this number also excludes entitlements, which are to a great extent 'auto pilot' spending that neither Congress or the President can readily affect. Your number probably includes entitlements.

Spending is a matter of negotiation between the Congress and the admin, as we have seen w/ the dustup over Planned Parenthood. Yes the Constitution gives the US House the power of the purse, but it also gives the prez veto power, which means that the prez has some leverage and some say in the budget.

edit: I tried my link and it was unreadable due to how google puts up the search. You can see it at this link. Just click and scroll down to p. 145 to see the bar graph.

Many things......but one thing for sure......he stopped the country from continuing to sink after George W Bush tanked it.

Just a minor miss.......but Reagan will not be the best President ever.

Clinton was great......revived the economy....22 million jobs - best economy in the history of the world, lowest crime rate in 30 years....etc., etc......surplus (which you will deny...but is fact).

Redink Ronnie doesn't make it because he started the national debt that still harms us today.

Clinton did the most for We the People in 8 short years.

Obama is probably going to end up being the best once the perspective of history has a chance to eliminate the racist noise. Obamacare ranks right up there with Civil Rights and Social Security.
