I was wondering how Steelers fans would react to the team's decision to stay in the locker room during the national anthem yesterday, and I can't see how the spectacle of Alejandro Villanueva standing alone in the tunnel helped things.

It's notable that while Steelers fans burned their team's gear, sales of Villanueva's jersey skyrocketed, which tells us a little about where the fans stand on the protests (in addition to the crowds booing the players for kneeling during the anthem).

There are videos in the article.

I guess we'll see if this changes the players' thinking and tactics. Right now they appear to be digging in their heels.

As I said elsewhere, freedom of speech works both ways...

Good for him! If I had any I would do the same thing.

The NFL needs to be cut off from any taxpayer funding when they need new stadiums if they're going to get involved with political nonsense.

And aren't you glad this guy has the right to express his opinion?

Wouldn't it be terrible if someone tried to silence him?

I can’t explain the disgust I felt when watching the Ravens kneel during our anthem and standing tall for for England’s. Absolutely pathetic!

My house will no longer contribute the viewer rating that it once reliably did on game day. That’s the most I can do, and hope/predict that millions of people will do the same.

To each his own. A little more excessive than I would be but hey, it's his stuff. I doubt these folks are a representation of the larger fan base though. Yeah I know a lot of folks are upset but most are probably just going to complain on Facebook about it and will be watching next week anyway....let alone burning their merchandise...

I can't help but think that Trump has done more to divide this country in 48 hours than the previous six weeks combined. Football, and sports in general, used to be a unifying force for Americans. Now, Trump forced the hand of athletes all over the spectrum by first attacking Stephen Curry and then attacking certain Football Players as un-American. He has painted them as the next target of ire for Trumpettes.

The fact that many Trumpettes were probably some of the most dire sports fans, and thus, now some of the most rabid detractors, is not lost either.

I believe most white people are tired of angry, malcontent black men, now adding that they are millionaire black men who want white people to pay $500 to watch them play a game for an hour and a half.

Is this more significant than Trump cultists burning their MAGA caps?

It is absurd to claim that President Trump started this. Black football players started this.

Setting aside that Trump is the one quoted by every story on this issue because he is the one who started by rescinding the invitation to the Warriors and he is the one who called the VERY few football players that were willing to kneel as "son of a bitch"....

Again, you do Trump no favors by undercutting his claim that this is not about race.

Trump will win this one, he has the American flag on his side.

The obstructionist, seditionist , the "DNC Resistance" and Black Lives Matters made a yuge tactical blunder and forgot to protect their right flank.

As for the NFL players, it's like a factory worker burning down the factory he works in.

    This was before Sunday.

That's a bit overboard for me, too - I'm not about to lump my entire team in with a few kneelers - but I think merchandise is one thing where fans might take out their anger on the players, teams and league. I'm not going to stop watching the 'Skins but I won't be buying any Niles Paul, Ryan Anderson or Chris Carter jerseys, either.

I am curious how you would define "winning?" Is it zero instances of protests on the field? Is it the NFL firing someone for protesting on the field? Is it the NFL shutting down as an organization?

I'm with ya. I watched the Cubs and Brewers instead of the football games that were televised during the same time slot yesterday - ordinarily I wouldn't do that. The only football I watched yesterday was the first half of the Redskins-Raiders game...
