Ok I will give you that we should learn as much about our enemies as we can. I recall when my Dad wanted me to learn about the history of the Evil Empire and the real history of Russia and I balked saying why learn about the bad people who sent my grandfathers to Siberia. It was the cold war and Dad said that we very well may have to fight the monsters some day. Well we only fought their vassal states like Vietnam but DAD was right we need to learn about our enemies.

I disagree. This is not religious education. It is education about a religion. If in a history or political science course you study communism or Nazism you are not studying to become a communist or a Nazi.

I don't think they should have any assignment on Islam in any school. What is the reason for this? I never had this when I went to school.

 

I think it was foolish to close down all of the schools today in Augusta County over a controversial homework assignment.

Except we aren't talking about a political science course, we're talking about a very specific religious belief required of Islam.

Would you okay if a teacher had students write a 3-page essay describing why the Aryan people are the master race?

 

It would be inept to dicuss the history of Islam without discussing Mohammed, but when you start covering specific religious believes such as "there is no god but Allah" in school it's just asking for push back, especially in the current social climate. Pretty dumb, IMO.

 

They could have highlighted some other aspect of ISLAM that I will agree. They could have did something about the fact that the Moors - Muslims had invaded 2 1/2 countries on the Iberian peninsula - SPAIN - PORTUGAL - Part of France. They could have thought them about how Islam - The Ottoman empire invaded the Balkans and created artificial Muslims in Bosnia - Albania - Herzegovina

They could have played the jazz tune .... "ISTAMBUL IS CONSTANTANPLE NOW" ...... and how the Muslims slaughtered virtually all of the Christians in Constantinople when Muslims over ran it.

They could have thought them how countries from Western and Eastern Europe stopped the Muslims at the gates of Vienna and saved Europe from falling under the dark cloud of Islamism .......


Oh look I am not being PC I pointed out some savage things that Muslims did to the non Muslim parts of the world. Oh I am so bad....

 

You can study about the history or existence of religions without studying the tenets of a religion for the sake of studying tenets to convert or force to believe.

You can study Nazism and it's evils without teaching that they believed they were the master race.

You can study that there was a Holocaust without teaching to deny it existed or that it was a good thing.

 

It should be shut down - if people are getting fired, suspended and removed for putting the Christian God in schools, well by golly they should be fired, suspended and removed for putting the Muslim Allah in schools. They don't want "under God" in the pledge of allegiance, they don't want football players to pray on the football fields, but it's okay for kids to be copying Islamic texts in arabic that say "There is no god but Allah, and Mohammed is the messenger of Allah."

Agree wrong time to even teach about the existence of that quote. If this was an AP class where the kids are bright you can teach that this is a tenet of Muslimism but not that anyone should take it as something one should believe.

There is a difference between teaching that there are religions that are established and teaching that one religion is the one for the establishment.

What is wrong with kids learning about other cultures? Certainly discussion of a topic is not an endorsement, such as saying a Christian prayer in school being lead in worship by an employee of that school would be.

 

That is a western term.

What the west used to called Islam is really of interest only to those interested in the long history of western blunders concerning that religion.

We are far better off teaching what it is, not what the west used to call it. It's really not all that much better than teaching old names for minorities - not that 1.5Billion adherents is much of a minority.

 

OK, but I didn't see an indication that the calligraphy exercise had anything to do with teaching that "one religion is the one for the establishment."
