Reagan and Trump BOTH promised to pick a woman for the next open spot on the Supreme Court - which they did. Hello? Bueller? Bueller?

So if they said they were going to pick a white woman, you would be just fine with that.

    7 whites of 9 is 77%.
Hispanic are a white ethnicity, so its actually 8/9 = 88%
Blacks make up ~13% of the population; to have 2 blacks on the court means they are over-represented.

If we're counting Hispanics as white, then it is 8 supreme court justice out of the 9 who are white. Also, the non-Hispanic white population of the US is actually 57% and not 77%. I have no idea where you are getting 77% from, but that is very inaccurate

    7/9 = 77%
Whites = 76.3% of the US demographic, of which 18.5% is the Latino ethnicity.
    Blacks = 13.2%
    All others = 10.5%

That 76% is combining whites and Hispanic whites. Hence the statistic at the bottom of the list for non-Hispanic whites, which says the number is 60%. It is also worth noting that those particular statistics are based on the federal census numbers, which are typically inconsistent due to how they are carried out

and again, if we are counting Hispanics as white, it is 8/9 of the supreme court judges who are white, and not 7/9

Tom Brady retired. Do they have to appoint a black woman as Buccaneers quarterback?

I think he should appoint Nichelle Nicholls. She's older than Biden but the oldest President should appoint the oldest justice. She won't serve long, maybe 3 seasons or a 5 year mission.

It's too bad this promise takes away from the career of Stephen Breyer. We should be discussing the wonderful career of the fifth most obscure justice of the last 100 years.

Seriously, I have been horrified reading every post in this and the other thread. I can only post from mom's house and ran out of time yesterday. So I posted frantically on Facebook about every aspect of the story, including the history of minorities on the court, starting with Catholics.

Breyer is Jewish. There aren't many black Jewish women, so unless Biden takes a woman from Ethiopia, he is probably rejecting that category of people. Is Biden antisemitic?

I assume biden will only pick someone ho is pro-choice. Many black women are Catholic, and should be pro-life. Many black women are Protestant and decided to be pro-life. His pool of pro-choice women is small indeed.

In Biden's defence, when he made the promise Ginsburg was still alive and he was expecting to be filling her seat.
I have a feeling though that if she had lived she would have been in no hurry to see her seat taken by a black woman.

Then came that madness last year as they tried to increase the court to 13 people. If Biden was filling 5 seats this year and did not pick a black woman for one of those seats he would be accused of racist misogyny.

Breyer's retiring, now they don't have to hire a hit man. I separated this from the jokes because this is not a joke.

I was fully prepared for a black woman to join the court in 2009. It was the former state chief justice from Georgia. She had just retired there but not too old. The fact we ended up with a Latina instead tells me that half-black Obama was afraid to nominate a black woman. Maybe Mrs. Emhoff will be afraid to nominate a black woman too.

When LBJ nominated Thurgood Marshall it was the cherry on top of the sundae of upgrading black people in America.

When Reagan appointed a woman almost everyone agreed it was about time. They also were comfortable with the choice.

When Clinton appointed Ginsburg it ended a gap of 24 years without a Jewish justice. No one objected too much.

When Obama appointed Sotomayor it was giving the perspective of that growing minority and people called her the first, because Cardozo was Jewish and Hispanic.

This does not fill a gap. There is a black. There are 1 women. This is not the time to make history. This is a time to pick a good justice.

I really feel sorry for Biden. This will probably be his only appointment and he has to waste it. If there was hope that picking a black woman would prompt Thomas to retire that would be a gamble worth trying, but no one expects that.

    I said that.
It doesn't change the fact 2 black justices = 22% of the court, when black make up 13% of the population.
    This, they will over-represented.
