Everything a politician does involves personal gain. Every single thing is intended to benefit the politician. That's exactly how our system works.

If Biden didn't strong arm Ukraine, and instead approved of their corruption, what would his voters think of him? Biden didn't brag about strong arming Ukraine because he thought it would hurt him politically. He bragged because he thought it made him look GOOD. That was the point of the conversation. He was touting something he considered a success in order to bolster his record of successful leadership.

Imagine a system in which politicians are only allowed to do things that hurt them politically. That would be the worst. They could never do anything that would make you want to vote for them again.
