The truck came from Russia on a military supply route. We know Russia has huge problems with the in proper storage of weapons and supplies so, yes, unstable shells could easily have gone boom.

Just like when they shot down that Malaysian airlines civilian passenger jet or when a Russian shell fell short in Donetsk. That truck got past the explosives screening systems and was waved through by guards.
