It is as dumb as it gets. There is no greater dollar benefit to the economy than a tourist dollar. Apparently Trump doesn't like these dollars coming into the US economy and being spent in the US on US goods.

So what does Chief Dotard suggest ? - That the Canadian Customs check the shoes of those entering the US - to make sure that Canadians are not purchasing shoes in the US "scuffing them up" and wearing them back into Canada ?

That will make the US retailers happy and help our economy .... yeah ... that's the ticket.

so they can have a plant in the usa and those countries... simple

it seems hard as we got used to it this way, just like two working parents use to be a huge benefit to most families, now for most it''s a necessity because it became the norm

when only a few corps outsourced our jobs was not a big deal, when most do it... it becomes a big deal

So far you are the only one who is dense here. There are no tariffs on US shoes for sale in Canada - this is thanks to NAFTA.

Trump complains about tariffs - using shoes as an example when there are no tariffs on shoes - and then complains about NAFTA which is the agreement that eliminated tariff's on shoes.

Sorry dude but - there is no excusing Trump on this one.

There is no better dollar than the tourist dollar. It is free money coming into our economy from the outside. If it was reversed - and It was Americans rushing out of the country to spend their dollars in other countries ... Trump would have a legitimate reason to complain ... BUT ITS NOT .... he is complaining about Canadians coming to the US and spending their money in the US.

There are few things that are more economically stupid than this.

Check this out - "China, which has bought an average 330,000 barrels per day (bpd) of U.S. crude oil this year"

    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...al-chairs-as-china-tariffs-loom-idUSKBN1JG175

Following from my previous post 330,000 bpd x 20 dollars in profit = 2.4 Billion dollars "In Profit" per year that will disappear.

Never mind the opportunity cost - that if Trump was not being an idiot this number could increase significantly as China imports over 9 million bpd.

I wonder how Texas is feeling about this.

Why do you assume I'm supporting Trump's trade policies ?

But I know where Trump is coming from and our trading partners have been sodomizing America with unfair trade policies since NAFTA became the law.

Both Canadians and Americans living near the border, shop cross border. This has been going on since around 1867 or so.
Depending on the current exchange rate and the desired products, there can be significant savings to be had on either side. Those big box discount stores in Buffalo are attractive, even if we have the same stores in Canada. It has to do with a) differing landed costs, b) differing overhead rates including all in labor costs and taxes and c) economies of scale in purchasing power (averaging over 8 times the volume).

This gigantic imbalance in the retail shoe trade is yet another example of Trump's in depth understanding of international trade and relations. My 10 year old grandson has a better handle on its realities.

    Simple? Well kind of.
So who will build the city and factory for Apple? Or do you expect them to pay for it.
How would you get 400,000 workers willing to sit ******** to elbow to assemble them.
We could do it the communist way, but usually we stick to capitalism.

Trump is against Canadians trying to beat Canadian customs? What a great partner, looking out for his Lil' buddy like that.

Truly stunning demonstration of his intellectual grasp.

That's not exactly true. NAFTA only eliminates tariffs on goods that originate within any of the three countries. That may have been Trump's point about Canada trans shipping cheap steel Into the US that originated in China.

I already posted what the Canadian import duty was on shoes that were bought in the USA.

Canadians coming to the US buying stuff (shoes in this case) has nothing to do with Canada selling cheap steel into US markets.

We WANT Canadians coming to the US to spend their hard earned dollars. We don't want them dumping cheap steal.

One not only has nothing to do with the other - Trump was attacking something that benefits us by equating it to Tariffs. This is idiotic - regardless of what Trump "may have meant".

    I couldn't make it work.
Are you trying to tariff their sales (vat) tax???

Why would Canadians buy their shoes in the US when they can import them directly from China and other countries?

Canada have a huge tariffs on imported shoes.

A $100 (Canadian dollars 132.76) pair of shoes add the Canadian taxes $18.80 and the Canadian import duty $23.90 and you're looking at $132.12 (Canadian dollars 175.46)

According to the International Trade Centre, a dual project of the United Nations and World Trade Organization:

    • Canada applies an average tariff rate of 13.12% on imported shoes.
    • The US applies an average tariff rate of 11.86%.
    • So, the average tariff rate on foreign shoes going into Canada is just slightly higher than shoes going into the US.
    • No tariffs are applied on footwear moving between the two countries if they are made in either country, due to the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA.
    • Additionally, members of the European Union and other Canadian allies also enjoy tariff-free shoe imports.

We also have import duties on goods bought in Canada by tourists and brought into the USA. This has nothing to do with tariff's as there are no tariffs on US shoes imported into Canada for sale to Canadians in Canada.

Nor does it have anything to do with Trump criticizing Canadians for buying stuff in the US - as if this has something to do with tariff's.
