technically there should be a tariff on shoes made in china, I recently bought shoes from the US that were made in China there should have been a tariff but I only paid the normal GST...

Yep Canadians pay higher taxes than Americans. There are federal and provincial income taxes, with a max rate slightly over 50% for the highest incomes. There is a blended gas tax, just like the sales taxes are.

Course we do get a bunch of stuff for those higher taxes that Americans dont', including universal healthcare, maternity/paternity leave, sick pay, vacation pay, notice terms, pension protections, to name a few.

Speaking for myself, I wouldn't give up my paycheck for any of those benefits. I can pay for my healthcare out of pocket, I have never needed or will never need maternity/paternity leave, I cant use sick pay or vacation pay (I'm self employed), and notice terms and pension protections are also not needed.

Taking a large share of a person's paycheck (labor) in exchange for a few bennies that they may never want or need is akin to slavery.

Check out made-in-USA New Balance shoes--they're cheaper in Canada.

I get it, because after all and in the final analysis, its always comes down to "myself".

In Canada there is a national sense of "myself". We are all passengers on the same ship on the same journey. We are fully prepared to work hard for our living, but believe we should be fairly treated in doing so. So we understand that life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans and at least some of the basic kinds of those happenings are covered for ALL Canadians. A totally different cultural approach that is not readily evident to most.

Living in Detroit for a time it did indeed annoyed me somewhat that there was no parking space at the local Costco store on weekends due to Canadians shopping over the border.

Every once in a while the Canadian government would threaten to take down the lic. numbers of the Canadian cars at such stores but I do not think that they ever did.

Yeah .. I wasn't even going to get into that.. it has nothing to do with Trump's idiotic criticism about Canadians coming to the US and spending money on shoes.

Sure - the point being that the claim that there are some ridiculously high taxes on goods when Canadians bring them from the US into Canada was demonstrably false.

Just goes to show how much Canadians are spending in the US -- which is really good for our economy.

Maternity/paternity, sick leave, and vacation benefits--you aren't required to pay for them. Ironically, that companies are required to provide these benefits makes the self-employed more competitive and allows them to charge more for their goods and services.
Slavery? Really? A bit of an exaggeration, I'd say.

    I'll need to look. :)
But actually most of them come from Asia and the EU just like the ones I get in the US.
I feel a little bit like a criminal, but then I look at the drug company stocks and I get over it. :)

I move around a lot and I have never run across a Costco that wasn't part of a larger complex of stores where you can find a place to park. A Costco by itself where I live part of the year in Canada has almost no place to park fifteen minutes after it opens, seven days per week.
The Canadian government has seriously relaxed enforcement at the border. People regularly declare hundreds of dollars worth of items and are just waved through the border.
