It really is difficult to say, because you would have to be in that situation to give an honest, concrete answer. Anything can be used as a weapon in that situation. A butcher knife, a scolding hot pan, there are multiple alternatives to a gun.

(1) Shotgun 12 Gauge (pump or semi)
(1) .223 / 5.56 - AR-15 works nice, but other options are AK or Mini-14

I would argue as would most people that know something about guns, that 5 is appropriate, but how can I blame a person for wanting an light version of an AR or 2 full size or 2 concealed, or a long barrel shotgun and a short version, or a variety of other options. I am an American and I do not tread on others right to bear arms.
