The Bible instructs Christians to "love their enemy" and "turn the other cheek" to him when stricken. While the Koran commands the believers to "fight", "kill", "slay" and "smite the necks" of the unbelievers "until.... religion should only be for Allah".

Those political changes put to rest the violence between them.

I'm sure they still disagree as protestants and Catholics do, but they aren't killing each other over than. It's clear the political issues were real.

If you want to identify a problem over which they are fighting, you'll have to do better than that.

Ok. I agree to an extent. What resulted in war and/or terrorism in each case is slightly different, I think.

In Iraq, we took away the jobs of a large segment of their economy - "debaathification". Then, we put in charge of the country a guy who had used his militia forces to violently oppose the Islamic sect who had power during the reign of Sadam. So, a decade of deadly civil war broke out as Sunnis tried not to be slaughtered by the militia and government forces.

That is not at all like what Syria faced or Afg or Palestine.


I believe we need to think through each case.

 

I think we had the misconception that if we just take out the dictator, all will be rosy.
Sunni and shia will dance in the streets, exchanging gifts, they can have elections, and live in utopia.

Granted, few westerners knew anything about Islam back then, but you would think the people
turning the wheels here, would have had some idea.
