You hang out on a forum that by very definition is polarizing and expect anything less? I see stupid bull(*)(*)(*)(*) posted by both sides of every isle on every issue every day here.

As an atheist myself, I agree with you that it's ridiculous. I celebrate Christmas and appreciate the holiday.

OK so what? What percent of them went to church on Christmas?

Holidays are for everyone, religious or not.

Unconstitutionally injected by Christians and should be removed.

But again what would change if it was made clear that supernatual gods do not exist?

And so what? Does me not being a Christian make me any less an American, a citizen of this country?

Actually under Saddam it was a secular country with a lot of Muslims living there but that being said when we speak of Muslim countries we speak of countries that instill Muslim law and requirements for the Muslim religion. And they are mostly quite brutal about it which is a result of mingling religion with government as the founding father feared.

Tell me what are the Christian values and principles unique to Christianity that make us this Christian nation that you believe to which I as an atheist do not adhere? Where are the Christian parts in the Constitution?

    Wrong. As usual:

    http://www.legalmatch.com/law-library/article/employee-religious-holidays.html

Religious discrimination by employers is expressly prohibited by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and by most state constitutions. Although employers do not have to satisfy an employee's every desire in accommodating his religious beliefs, they are required to make "reasonable accommodations." The most common such accommodation is granting an employee time off to observe a religious holiday.

And atheists are not very good at making excuses for their behavior. You and I both know ... or at least I do... that Easter derives from the pagan fertility festival for Esther.

And September 14th could be a non-religious holiday for someone but if it's not religious, it's not protected.

I would be fine with that. But as I said, employers will still choose to give people religious time off, whether you like that or not doesn't really matter.

The problem with ideologies, religions or other political believes, is that a lot of believers or voters cannot be convinced (the result is always rising emotions)
Two strong opposing believes or parties only lead to more struggle and emotion. What rising emotions do is enforcing an hierarchy (because the members of each group with the same mind sets are starting to band together more and more over the years), and that is not in advantage of the freedom of all these believers.
(islam and christianity are the largest religions in the world, so are the most vurnable when they start to oppose too much or when it flips in the other direction, to unite too much)

Best thing to do is to ignore an opposition (and ignore provocations and propaganda), there is no way to convince the other side.
If atheists see christianity as opposition it works in the same way as christians see atheists as opposition, both sides have the same 'attitude' (that only their believe is good or the truth, has to do with emotion, in other words, survival, because everybody is part of the ecosystem) All thoughts and emotions lead to an endless struggle.

An atheist vs christian struggle is unsolvable. And that works for every religion or ideology in the same way. Are all dilemmas.

I think the Christian side on this thread has given a very good example of why the founding fathers put in the 1st separation of church and state.

IMO, real atheists aren't opposed to religion on bit - it's just not their cup of tea and they certainly understand how ridiculous the "atheist" trolls can be.

Of course you have the over dramatic atheist trolls who dedicate their lives to something they don't even believe in the first place. Those clowns have mental issues and if it wasn't atheism they would be radical some other way.

I think Jon Stewart said it best: "We're atheists, we're not vampires" when commenting on the display of crucifixes.

The real arrogance comes from people who take the benefits of a day off while mocking the very reasons the day exists in the first place. All I was asking was that atheists - and by that I meant the militant atheists who get all upset about Christmas - to start walking the walk. Show us just how committed you are to your core beliefs, atheists!

There is no need to get defensive. I am an Atheist as well. I'm not saying that since we are Atheists while the majority of Americans are Christian it somehow makes us less American or anything. I don't know what would change if we could actually prove that God does not exist. It's a pointless argument to make because we can never prove God doesn't exist and religious folks can never prove that God does exist. And since most of us are pretty firm in our beliefs I doubt any of us will ever change each others minds.

I agree with you that a good chunk of those who claim themselves Christian are by no means adhering to the teachings of Christ. It seems to me that many people pick and choose which Biblical teachings they wish to comply with and sort of disregard the ones that conflict with how they want to live their lives. If thats the way they wish to live then so be it, it's none of my business. I know all sorts of religious people, some more devout than others. I know many who "sin" WAY more than I do and believe that as long as they say they believe in Christ that automatically makes them a Christian. I know some who follow the words of the Bible almost to the letter and believe that is the only way to salvation.

I, as an Atheist, am much closer to the definition of a "good" person than many of my Christian friends. My philosophy is simple, it doesn't take God to tell me to be a kind and caring person and just because someone believes in God doesn't automatically make them a good person. If we took the whole "you must believe in Christ" thing out of the picture and lined me up next to many Christians I guarantee you that I would be closer to salvation than many of them. The only difference is that since I don't believe in God I am automatically condemned which I find hilariously hypocritical.

The benefits of the day is having a day off? Is that what Christians believe the benefit of the birth of Christ is? That's funny.

Want what both ways? Do you really think losing a day off from work is something atheists would agonize over if Christmas was abolished?

I just think it is amusing that instead of singing the praises of the benefits that a practicing Christian reaps and all the wonderful things being religious extolls upon the ones that abide by it and how non-believers are missing out, you focus on the day off thing.

Great. Start putting the rubber to the road then.

I mean, does it affect me personally? Not at all. I'm just pointing out that the same people whining about Christmas and them thar dirty Christians seem to like the benefits that Christmas has with that nice day off.

It gets posted here all the time: "IF you were a Christian, THEN you would believe [fill-in-the-blank]"

Okay, fine. Time to play it both ways. IF you were an atheist, THEN you would work Christmas for normal pay. Perfectly fair.

Not even close! A day off is secondary to what Christmas is all about - for me anyway.

There are probably many atheists and otherwise that would have no problem conducting business on Christmas, but for the fact that other people they do business with are not working on that day. Cannot even see why you see this as such a big deal that it was worthy of a thread, but hey...whatever floats your boat..or arc..or whatever.

Fair enough. I suppose my comment wasn't really directed at people like you. Hence why I worded it as "leftist/atheist." Since usually it's the atheist people on the political left that are the problem. And it looks like you agree with me on that.

In an allegedly free country individuals have the right to adhere to religion and have the RIGHT to display religious symbols and have the RIGHT to pray and celebrate for religious reasons and I could care less if some punk atheist doesn't like it.... In what universe is a public display of religion a threat to a non believer?

Militant atheists are terrible greedy self absorbed people...

Anyone that fears a crucifix is either a vampire or a delusional individual...

The atheists I know basically say "I don't believe in God" but that is enough for them - they're not threatened by religion, nor do they find religious displays offensive.

Atheism has become a religion - a religion of hate and bigotry.

Oh I think you just demonstrated the arrogance of what I speak quite clearly. Just amazing how you would want to deny others time to spend the holiday season with their family and friends and enjoy the fellowship of the season. That only Christians should have holidays and should be able to FORCE others to work in their place. Yep no wonder some atheist are pushing back.

You're doing a good job of making your religious beliefs look quite ugly.

Nothing "defensive" about it. Just the truth.

Again if you took every vestige of Christianity out of the nation, what would be different? Not much. Most atheist I know have the same moral beliefs as most Christians I know. The same principles. The same love of country and family. We just don't believe in supernatural beings looking over us and promising some Utopia after we die.

What is on display is the ugly arrogance of some Christians and their belief they should be able to control those who do not hold their religious beliefs and that they should get special treatment because of theirs. I think the Jesus I learned of as a child would run them out of the temples.

    - - - Updated - - -

ROFL I know the feeling

Sure when it's called for, but in this country and this thread is is very apparent where the arrogance lies and who is making a stink about whom.

I'm non religious and this time of year is important to me. It's the one time of the year I can get the family together in the one place.
