What's the percentage of people who graduate college and are STEM graduates?

Anyone can go to college and get a liberal arts degree if their mommy and daddy have enough money to send them, or if they want to go $50k in debt and work at a starbucks with their Archaeology degree.

No kidding. We quote trump and Republican Senators who posit crackpot conspiracy theories, and they quote Bob the HS History Teacher in No-name California.

He should be canned or at least disciplined and put on probation.

However, I do agree with this.

Perhaps some recruiter convinced his brother or a family member to serve, and they ended up dead. I do have a problem with recruiters being on school campuses. They are salesmen trying to convince young people to risk their lives for some glorified bs. The kids are young and impressionable and easily persuaded by nonsense. If a person is truly driven to serve, let them discover that on their own. Don't sell potential death to kids like its just another job, while waving a flag.

If Bush hadn't invaded the wrong country, we would have tens of thousands fewer broken and dead soldiers now.

I came within a few hours of joining the Navy. My recruiter smoked about two packs of cigarettes a day. He was chain smoking while he was telling me how great it is to serve.

If they are going to recruit kids, they should be required to show real war photos so they can see what they are risking. Let them see the dismembered body parts. Show them the video of dead marines being dragged through the streets behind a jeep. Let them see the dead children. Let them see the bodies of former soldiers who committed suicide. Show them the torture cells and equipment that might be used on them. Go for a tour of a VA hospital so they can see what it's like to be all that you can be.

This really has nothing to do with the topic. Sure there are some that choose military service because that is something they really wanted to do but for many it is not like they had a whole lot of other choices. The military is a great option for those folks because it presents an opportunity for advancement. This however does not change the fact that they did not have many other options. In many ways the military is an expensive substitute for welfare and is in of itself a giant welfare program.

Say what you like about Archaeology but, at least these folks are not out there killing people for no good reason ...errand boys of the State.

As someone who is disgusted by the i humane nature of the US Military, and would love to see it reduced exponentially to the size of a pea, I see little wrong with this rant. I disagree that the people themselves are not intellectual, but the military has nothing intellectual to it. Our kids need to be touchy recruiters lie to their faces about military life to enroll them, and that it’s better not to be a veteran. I’m proudly Anti-Military for one reason. Because I rather not support an organization that kills fellow Americans senselessly.

The next generation needs to have their minds engineered to view the military with more disdain. The US Military has done more damage than good, and this needs taught, whether it was the Bartle of Gettysburg or WW2.

I say that for someone who does not go for 'pc' you sure are worried that someone's feelers got hurt. This is a high school, not a grade school. People of authority will be expressing some strong opinions around him from here on out. Some of them are going to be professors, or bosses, or maybe a future father-in law. Its time to let this kid raise his hand and say what he has to say respectfully about what he heard, instead looking for a 'gotcha' moment to take out of there. If he is offended , I think he can try a little less duplicity and a little more candor.

He does have a point. When I was in school the military was pitched to three types of students. The first were poor students who could get a leg up on education by serving and the government would fund their education rather than going into huge debt which they might not be able to do. The second group were the patriot kids in the NJROTC. My high school had that and some people were into the military and policing and service was pitched to them. The final group was the students who were failing. Military service was a benefit to them because they could sort of fudge things with some remedial classes and serve and then service would rank above whatever certificate they got.

So he is not wrong the military does recruit on the stupid side, and they get a few. Perhaps the extra training helps those who were already behind get to a level where they can survive. I am not saying every person is like this, but there is a big group of them. The smarter kids are not often pushed down a military path unless they are poor and cannot get academic scholarship help. The military may be a path for the stupid, but it is also a path for intelligent people who need a hand paying for their education. There may be an elite intelligence recruiting area, but I am not sure that applies in high school, and is probably more for military contractors and weapons research positions.

Anyone who doubts the military does not advance society in great scientific ways is staring at the proof that they do. The concept of a network of computers talking to each other over a web that is hard to break is the basis of what created TCP/IP that our internet works on now. Corporate entities like AOL Had to adapt to the military invented standards over their own proprietary systems. The development of the internet is something the American military is responsible for. Even Microsoft and Apple had to conform to IP.

I know a metric but ton of people that joined the military specifically for the free money for college. The other option was to work for the government or a nonprofit and get your student loans forgiven.

It has everything to do with the topic.

Going to college does not make one intelligent any more than joining the military means you're dumb.

Colleges churn out some of the stupidest people out there, all they have to do is pay their money, show up to class, and get their degree.

No other choices? A lot of people go to college because they couldn't make it through the military training, and they know it, because they don't have the mental fortitude, willpower, or are simply physically weak.

There are a staggering number of people graduating from colleges that are deeply in debt and have a worthless degree that gets them nowhere in life.

I don't call that approach intelligent.

If the military was welfare every liberal in the country that could push themselves out of a chair would sign up.

Issue I was focusing on was not so much intelligence but lack of choice. That more often comes from poverty as opposed to lack of intelligence.
I agree that colleges churn out some stupid people - many of them with STEM degrees.
I would suggest that we do not emphasize social science enough - especially sociology (if taught properly which is a big if). This is a long convo but Psychology is often a waste of time because it is not taught properly and second .. because Psychiatry is so revered but in reality is garbage.

I hate to burst your bubble but ... wealth redistribution is wealth redistribution. The military is funded through wealth redistribution.

What orifice did you pull that drivel out of? Where has anyone expanded blame to anyone other than this one teacher? What planet have you been on where you haven't seen the daily posts from the left that claim Trump supporters, the GOP, or conservatives in general are stupid, racist, bigots, etc.

No Battle of Gettysburg no slaves freed. No siege of Vicksburg no slaves freed. No WWII participation by the US and maybe Hitler rules most of the world.

But it is true that the military didn't get good results in Korea or Vietnam -- but it was pushed into these wars by globalists and crazy US politicians.

Sounds like one of those people with a liberal college degree who thinks they actually know something.
That would also reflect on the people who hired him, as his kind of mental process and prejudice would not be too hard to see.

I think a couple years in the marines would show him the error of his ways. May even force him to grow up.

    And he's a teacher.

That particular degree is only lower in general IQ of the person possessing it than social work degrees.
